He saw the gap and thought it was time to go back to the barn.

Wow! Unfortunate, but so funny!
What he was thinking...
"7 Length lead at the top of the stretch...really!? Why do I even bother? I'm claiming myself and shipping to a better track!"

I bet a maiden once I think at Golden Gate (or whatever that closed track was) I thought it was a nice overlay. The horse had thrown a rider 2 races before and been eased a few times in like 5 starts. He was a front running speed demon. But unruly also in the gate.
This time the Great Russell Baze had taken the mount.
I figured this horse must be figured out, Baze was willing to ride.
The bell goes off and He goes like hell into the lead, just like the video above. It’s almost a carbon copy of this vid. Except this horse turned right and ran full blast through an open gate that couldn’t be more than 3 feet wide. Baze uncorked himself like a pilot ejecting from a jet, right before the gate.
I was counting my money..........till he got to the gate.
Later they showed a guy sticking a mic in Baze face and asking him where the horse went?
Baze looks at the camera and says “he was running through the employee parking lot last I saw him”

We saw that race live. We watched the turn (well, I guess we should call it a non-turn) at least 20 times. I don't know if it was a "Oh, I smell oats!" moment or what. But it was hilarious.
I had a win bet on the 8 in that race. Oops.

That horse has probably done that dozens of times in the morning, he just did it out of habit. Go out for his morning jog, and then return to the barns via the gate at the head of the stretch.
Ha. He thought he was out training and his run was over for the day.

Ha! You're welcome!
So, the current trend is that he does this during even races (his second and fourth). So he's good to go for his fifth race, but stay away from him during the sixth race!

Sad to say it, but he needs to be banned to protect bettors. Handicapping is hard enough without having to wonder if a horse that is good enough to win will finish the course.

As funny as that is to watch, I have a hard time believing that this can’t be trained out of a horse. It’s not like you’re turning to home in front of a crowd that’s going to spook a horse at CT
