Shady?
Many New York Stock Exchange-listed stocks halted for a technical issue
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/24/many...cal-issue.html
Quote:
Trading in dozens of stocks on the New York Stock Exchange was halted shortly after the market opened on Tuesday due to an apparent technical issue.
The major stocks impacted included Morgan Stanley, Verizon, AT&T, Nike and McDonald’s, according to the NYSE’s website. Many stocks were shown to have abnormally large moves when the market opened, which may have triggered volatility halts.
CNBC’s Bob Pisani said on “Squawk on the Street” that the issue appears to be a technical one and not something that happened on the trading floor.

What kind of "technical issue" would result in stocks showing abnormally large moves that "may have triggered volatility halts" if the volume and price moves actually weren't real?

One reason I won't use stop orders. Can get stopped out on a glitch.

The above screenshot from a ZeroHedge article shows a chart of Wells Fargo at market open this morning.
15% drop... and right back up.
Technical glitch?
Some rogue actor with deep pockets fleecing everyone who thought they were protected after buying the rally because they put in stops?
Hackers?
Almost 4 hours later and still waiting for news about what really happened.

The weird part is...futures showed no reaction...you would think something like that, even if fake, would have some sort of knee-jerk reaction in futures markets

supposedly, the only stocks that someone can see your stops are on the listed ones. but even on the unlisted ones, the market makers have programs to figure out where most of the stops are going to be just by knowing historical trading. they will go after those stops anytime they think they have the opportunity to get them.

and for those that think they can trade with "mental stops', you will eventually get broadsided with a rug pull.

Further explanations still sound shady....

The announcement by the NYSE late Tuesday that some trades that occurred right at the open would be busted, but others would not, added to the confusion. Many are trying to figure out how much money they may have lost yesterday.
|
For those that lost money, others MADE MONEY. I wonder who the winners are that they won't bust? Someone or some entity (too big to fail likely) that is desperate for cash at the moment? LOL
Ever wonder how easy it would be for the government to swoop in and just steal money using this type of thing as cover? Every once in a while, when things get really desperate...along comes some "glitch" or "fat finger" that plunges the market (any market really, or just one big stock) one way or the other temporarily....imagine the amount of money one could make in a matter of moments if you knew this was going to happen in advance?

they can do this to gold too, and i have no doubt in my mind they will too, sometime in April or May.
personally, i don't sell physical gold, but will hedge against the physical by shorting paper gold.

Maybe this is how the US Gov't recouped the money it likely paid for the recent suspected hacker ransom attack on the FAA's systems that led to a ground stop on air traffic two weeks ago...lol
