Believe it or not a lot of people buy a lot of that baloney, as real. Might not happen here but a website I don't go to any more, that was over run with young Democrats, had people thinking cops should shoot knives and guns out of people's hands.

I had a friend who managed a drive-in, got in for free, free sodas and popcorn if I brought my own containers. Had to wing it once, girlfriend's mom was still up when I brought her home and invited me in. She asked us what the movie was about. I thankfully had seen the previews and read what the critics thought about it. I always parked in the back row.

The entire movie was ignored by the Oscars. I think that's at least partly due to the fact that it came out the same year that Wayne played Genghis Kahn.

Martin Pawley (the Jeffrey Hunter character) was not Ethan Edwards' brother (Ethan is the John Wayne Character). Martin was an adoptive nephew.

He also played Jesus Christ in the re-make of King of Kings.
To me it's obvious that Ethan has feelings for Debbie's mother Martha. When Ethan left to go fight in the civil war he does not return for eight years. Debbie is eight years old when she's kidnapped. Speculation is that Ethan is not Debbie's uncle. He's her father.
Two girls are kidnapped. The older one, Lucy, is killed by the native Americans. Watch the Daniel Day-Lewis movie Last of the Mohicans (or read James Fenimore Cooper's book). The two stories are similar. In Cooper's book two girls are kidnapped and one of them commits suicide. In turn Cooper's book is based on a historical event where two girls were kidnapped by Iroquois and one of them was killed.
By the way, there's a scene in Star Wars where Luke Skywalker finds that his aunt and uncle have been killed by storm troopers. George Lucas had admitted that he ripped this scene directly from The Searchers.

Watched a western the other night with Broderick Crawford bellowing about those "crazy red devils." Spit spraying, gut protruding, barely intelligible, clearly longing for a Lucky....

Broderick Crawford was also a crack shot on the TV show Highway Patrol.
He never lost a shoot out with a bad guy using his trusty stub nose .38 revolver. He often hit a kill shot on the first pull of the trigger.

No discussion of westerns is complete without including the original "Magnificent Seven". Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn among the seven good guys. The icing on the cake is Eli Wallach as the top bad guy and a score nominated for an Emmy. It doesn't get any better than that.

Speaking of acting, Eli Wallach was terrific in "Baby Doll", a Tennessee Williams play adaption. He always played a magnificent asshole.
