SA 1-24-15

R8 - CAL CUP SPRINT 150k 6F (D)
2 SAN ONOFRE 4-5
3 ROUSING SERMON 4-1
7 MARINO’S WILD CAT 6-1
9 SPIRIT RULES 6-1

2 SAN ONOFRE

Not sure how to beat this one here. He has won 4 straight (4 of 5) and all with 97+ Beyers. Loves the SA oval. Smith has been up in all four wins. Works are lightning fast and have the clockers’ head’s spinning. Gets the lead early and should just open up late. First time stakes race.

3 ROUSING SERMON

May have been the best race of his career when he was 2nd by a neck to G1 winner, Big Macher, last time out. Hollendorfer runner will get to close into a fast early pace. 3 for 11 on this dirt track. Expect him late.

R7 CLM 12,500 – 7F DIRT (3:35 PT)
12 KOZANI 6-1
11 ZNELLE 30-1
6 BALLARD RULER 10-1
13 APERFECTDAYTOFLY 6-1

12 KOZANI
Never know how he would have run with a clean trip in last. When the 2nd choice here, Znelle, started to back up, it pushed this one far back on the turn. Once clear, he came running. Has faced and beaten better. Trainer wins w/ this kind often. Floated very wide 2 back. Upsets these.

11 ZNELLE
Most definitely a reach with these low percentage connections signed on here. But, he beat many of these two and four races back. Winner 2 back was nosed out (40-1) vs opt clm. Too fast, too early last. Playable.

RACE 4 MDN CLM 20,000 – 1M DIRT (2:30 PT)

9 SPRING ACTION 7-5
5 CRANE LODGE 5-2
1 BEACH FEVER 2-1
3 COULDASHOULDADID 4-1

9 SPRING ACTION
Felt the race he exited last out was going to come up strong and it has. Of the six who have run back 3 have won and one ran 2nd (the winner was 2nd in a turf starter alw at 7-2). He has nibbled vs much better many times and now drops to lowest level today. Seems better routing. Tough to beat here.

5 CRANE LODGE
Was only 3 behind the top choice 2 back and he faced winners in his last start. He was pulling early in two of last three. 6 year old gelding used to be in with Todd Pletcher. Probably has a few issues but this drop will help quite a bit. Nice 4F blowout since last. Expect him to be an exotics player here.

RACE 5 MSW 56,000 – 1M DIRT (3:07 PT)
6 NOWALKING 5-2
5 SOMETHING AWESOME 8-1
3 TWENTYTWENTYVISION 2-1
2 KRIS THE GREAT 4-1

6 NOWALKING
Was really traveling well in the common race won by Little Curlin. However, the loose horse, Simon Kenton, completely took him out of the race for most of the stretch. Lucky to hang in there for 3rd. Comes back with 3 sensational works and keeps Bejarano. 2nd in last won in MSW on turf next out.

5 SOMETHING AWESOME
Sire and dam earned 6M combined. Dam was an 18 time winning Cal-bred who was best routing for Hollendorfer. He never looked comfortable on the inside in last. Smith gets on and has been up in the morning moves since last. Clockers indicate he is working well. Doubt we’ve seen his best yet.

RACE 3 MSW 56,000 – 5.5F DIRT (1:30 PT
)
5 MILHAUD 5-1 Prat Mandella

3 YIANNIS 2-1 Talamo Sadler
6 TRIED AND TRUE 6-1 Pedroza Harty
4 GIMME DA LUTE 5-2 Garcia Baffert

5 MILHAUD
Firster for Mandella. This gelding has a lot of sprint in the pedigree on both sides. Mandella has won w/ 2 of his last 4 starts, both in MSW and one was a 9-1 firster on the grass ridden by Prat. Easily outworked older 40k claimer Regally Soul recently. Looks ready.

3 YIANNIS
$560,000 purchase in March of last year. This first timer for Sadler has been working out for quite a while. Sadler is about 16% with debut runners 3YO+ MSW sprinting. Works are extremely sharp. Sadler off to slow start here, only 1 for 18 w/ 1strs for this owner.

2-1-15 (FULL CARD FREE TODAY)

RACE 5 MSW 56,000 – 6.5F TURF (1:00 PT)
9 CURLIN’S FOX 5-2
3 REVENUE VIRGINIUS 12-1
11 SCREAMING SKYLAR 7-2
4 MAMBO TALE 8-1

9 CURLIN’S FOX
Won’t be much of a secret. Both clockers have her working off the charts. She has been steamrolling a workmate or two each time out. Mike Smith has even been up in the AM. Dam won 700k (500k on turf for these connections). Gaines can win 1st out but also isn’t afraid to give them one (think Bolo).

3 REVENUE VIRGINIUS
Ran 3rd in the debut at 36-1 in a MSW at DMR. 2nd place finisher from that race came back to win vs MSW and winner came back to run 2nd beaten a neck in the Barretts Deb at LRC. Made a middle move in last but faded. Gets a new rider, Talamo, who won 4x on Saturday. Also getting first Lasix.

RACE 3 OPT CLM 40K – 1M 1/4 TURF (2:00 PT)
7 HUG AND A KISS 2-1

3 HOOP OF COLOUR 3-1
5 SYLISH IN BLACK 9-2

2 KADESHA 4-1

7 HUG AND A KISS
Trainer is 6 for 16 (38%) with 10 in the money with Euro shippers running in optional claim 1st in the US. (1 for 2 with such for owner). 2x G3 placed filly has been working decently for this. Winner two back ran 3rd in a G1 in her next start in front of Treve, then 5 back in the G1 Arc de Triomphe. Gets L1 for US debut.

3 HOOP OF COLOUR
Motion Euro shipper ran 4 good races in GB last year. Motion is 38% with Euro shippers for Flaxman Holdings. Very nice worktab. She is a half to Aruna who won first in the US for these connections and took 5 of her first 7 in the US (including a G1 & G2, all on turf). Royally bred. It looks like she is ready to run.

RACE 3 -- MSW 56K – 5.5F DIRT (2:00 PT)

7 TWENTYFIVE TO LIFE 5-1
5 CHAULK O LATTEY 8-1
2 TALE OF PAPA NICK 4-1
10 JEAN EDWARD 4-1

7 TWENTFIVETOLIFE

Trainer Hollendorfer just won with a 1st timer for Tommy Town T’breds (a Kafwain filly) who was training identically to this one. That win came in the last race on Thursday at 10-1 & she won for fun. Sire gets about 10% with 1st time starters. Second call rider up. Winner on Thursday was with Nakatani. Should be live.

5 CHAULK O LATTEY
Second of two in here for Baltas. This one is ridden by Desormeaux who was up in the AM moves lately. Clockers noticed her as she outworked todays foe, Tale of Papa Nick, in the Jan 30th move. Exits a key race as the 3rd and 6th place finishers came back to win next out (MSW turf, 77 Beyer & MC20k, 56 Beyer).

RACE 9 OPT CLM 40,000 – 1M TURF (4:48 PT)

6 FRESH FELINE 8-1 Blanc Shirreffs

3 DAKOTA KID 6-1 Stevens Proctor
11 SKY MEGA 12-1 Bejarano Garcia
10 INTOXICATING MOVE 4-1 Nakatani D’Amato

6 FRESH FELINE
The NY shippers for Shirreffs have been running well in So. Cal. This one was washy at the gate in last and closed into a pace that wasn’t blazing. He was moving best late. Was the best 3 back but blocked for most of the stretch. This Kitten’s Joy cost 215k. Something here.

3 DAKOTA KID
Debut was eventful to say the least. She missed it badly and was far, far back. She was flying late and really showed something at the end of that one. She was hammered down in the return and move to turf and she responded. Proctor 24% w/ last out maiden winners on turf.

2-8-15

2-8-15 SANTA ANITA
RACE 9 --- STARTER ALLOWANCE 40,000 – 6F DIRT (4:41 PT)

8 CRIMSON GIANT 12-1
6 COOLINGTON 6-1
4 THIS TIME I WIN 7-2
2 KINGS ADVENTURE 6-1

8 CRIMSON GIANT
Doesn’t miss a dance and comes back on just one week rest. That 2nd place finish to Seeking the Sheriff is no joke. It was a career high Beyer and he was getting to the classy Ellis runner. Could not get a better pace situation for his late run. 1 for 65 is hard to digest but he will be passing them late.

6 COOLINGTON

Nice win last out when dropped in class and moved to Bejarano. Comes off the shelf again here and has a fast work tab for Puype. Have to think Bejarano may have had options. Should travel well just off the speed here.

2-12-15 SANTA ANITA
RACE 3 --- MDN CLM 20K – 7F DIRT (1:57 PT)
4 CITY STATE 3-1
7 SALT OF THE EARTH 6-1
1 WHAT WE DOING 20-1
2 BURNING 5-2

4 CITY STATE
The most likely winner in this race based on the class drop. He ran an even 4th at maiden claiming 50,000 last time out against much better. His Beyers are consistently near the par for this race so the drop makes sense. Woke up with a blowout work since last. It is good to see Baze stay aboard. Presses early and wins with a late rush.

7 SALT OF THE EARTH
This could very well be the right distance for this one. He has run in the second in all three tries at the distance (at 15-1, 6-1 and 7-2). Comes from far out of it and is dropping from 1M 1/8 so he’ll have a lot to do in the lane. Loses 7 pounds with the apprentice rider. Fits with this group.

RACE 7 --- OPT CLM 40K – 6.5F TURF (4:05 PT
)

5 GUGGENHEIM 5-2
2 EDDIE’S FIRST 4-1
10 INCLINE VILLAGE 6-1
9 SKYLANDER 3-1

7 GUGGENHEIM
Really like the way this one handled the field in his maiden win last time out. He broke on top, pressed the pace and drew away. All turf in the pedigree. Dam was 7 for 11 on turf and 4 for 4 at this distance here. 2nd to The Big Beast, came back to win G1 King’s Bishop.

2 EDDIE’S FIRST
Pressed a very fast pace in the G3 Daytona in his last start. He won a race here last May at this distance with a 100 Beyer (9 length win). Clockers all say he is working tremendously for his return. Blinkers go on. Have to expect he will be sent. Looks to go wire to wire here.

RACE 7 MSW 56,000 – 6.5F TURF (3:31 PT)

8 ENTRECHAT 2-1 Prat Drysdale

1 AUTUMN FLOWER 15-1 Baze Hendricks
6 BOAT DRINKS 5-2 Espinoza Sadler
2 OMORFI KOPELLA 8-1 Talamo Sadler

8 ENTRECHAT
This is a layup. This 280,000 3YO filly was bet down to 6-1 in debut and ran a huge race. She was taken 6 wide on the turf which was the difference. Love the breeding for grass. Female tree produced the ’92 Beverly D winner, Kostroma (millionaire on turf). Working sharply.

1 AUTUMN FLOWER
Drew the 10 post in last and now moves to the rail. Hendricks filly was wide in the last race, a race turning out to be strong. The winner came back to win in an opt claiming race. 6th was Conquest Artura, who came back to win a MSW here last week. She is working well.

RACE 9 MDN CLM 50,000 – 5.5F DIRT (4:36 PT)

8 BERT’S BABY 5-1 Perez Dunham
2 EASTER LILLIAN 9-2 Garcia Mandella
5 GOLD JOURNEY 5-2 Espinoza Walsh
7 BEHEST 4-1 Pereira D’Amato

8 BERT’S BABY
Trainer doesn’t win out of turn (9 for 225 = 4%) but this is the kind of race he can take. This filly was 3rd in her debut and it was better than it looked. She dueled with the 9 length winner, dropped back and re-rallied to get nipped for the place. Winner won back in allw easily. 4th won for open 75k mdn clm.

2 EASTER LILLIAN
Was entered on 2-1-15 for mc30k and scratched by the trainer and ends up in here for 50k. Word is she popped the gate and showed great speed in the 1-26-15 drill. Mandella not great with 3YO+ 1sters but faces little in this spot.

RACE 4 MDN CLM 20,000 – 5.5F DIRT (1:57 PT)

2 GO GOLDIE GO 8-1 Baze Mullins
12 SOMETHINGABOUTNICK 6-1 Gryder Sierra
5 ANTINANCO 7-2 Antongrgi Headley
3 LITTLE BRO GARRETT 5-1 Puglisi Puype

2 GO GOLDIE GO
It is worth noting that #8 Practical is coming in off of the vet scratch list. This is a first timer for Jeff Mullins, who is pretty cold right now. Mullins has good numbers with debut runners in maiden claiming (25%). Works are very good for a trainer that normally works them slow. Baze has been up in the AM.

12 SOMETHINGABOUTNICK
Flashed speed at 36-1 in his debut and was pulling before basically easing in late. He comes back as a first time gelding and a needed drop in class. The trainer is having a good meet with 7 of 15 in the exacta. Expect to see more.
