In reference to Pele, the Wikipedia entry states "His 1,279 goals in 1,363 games....is recognised as a Guinness World Record."

Whether or not that's accurate, I've done a net search to try to put those numbers into context without success. What I'm trying to determine is, at the highest levels of soccer, what percentage of kicks that are intended to reach the goal for a score are successful for the typical player. Also, what would be the typical percentage for the best players? By comparison, the best hitters in baseball typically bat .300 and higher.

If you want to increase the rate for a world class scorer like Harry Kane, his career goals per shot on goal is 35%.
