It cost the trainer $600-$800 a month to feed a horse, supply bedding etc. Then you factor in your help and exercise riders you are in the $1000 a month range to train a horse. The owner pays for shoes, vet bills, etc. Depending on what track and what part of the country you are in I have seen rates as low as $40 a day up to over $160 a day (some of the big name trainers even more) to train your horse. Seems we have different opinions on the economics of race horse training and ownership. Look over the pp's of races at lower-tier tracks, and find plenty of trainers whose horses don't even make their feed bill in purses. They need to supplement their income--unless they come from a racing family-or have a rich daddy to prop their "hobby". And yes, if you don't make a living at the track-it is a hobby. Same with a gambler who doesn't make money-is he a professional gambler? Naw just a hobbyist.

Certain trainers seem to lack any skills at all. This trainer is so bad...he can't even run a successful betting coup.(I x'd his name out because my point wasn't to ridicule him/her personally.) This isn't all that uncommon, either.





There is a joke frequently told in racing circles that runs along the lines of:

"How do you become a millionaire owner in racing?

Start out as a billionaire."

Trainers don't need purse money to stay afloat....they get a flat fee from the owners
If they do win a race , they get a bonus tip out of the owners share...WTF!!

This is why I can get out any faster ...its a losing situation!!

as in most fields of endeavor some do well at certain things and others do well at others .the guys i knew all did well at the windows if you know what i mean and 1 of them never told the owner when the horse was ready he would always say horse is up on the toes looking better but he needs a race .used to be an angle if you saw the guy at the track in a nice suit before the race its a go! and your right GB that 60-135 aday was the trainers end payed by the owner!

These trainers are also owners in most cases, or they wouldn't have any racing stock at all.

One of them is not a nickel. Didn't say there were no nickels. We know BOTH cannot be nickels. In other words the quarter is the 1 coin that is NOT a nickel.

Day money at the very best allows a trainer to break even.

There are three ways a trainer can make serious money and become comfortable financially.

1) Commissions and appreciation dollars from buying and selling horses.

2) Successfully gambling on their own horses.

3) Purse money. 10% which unlike jocks in most cases is 10% all the way across the board.

It is EXTREMELY hard to stay afloat as a trainer. EXTREMELY!

The people getting rich at the races are vendors.

Vets, farriers, feed men, tack stores, jocks agents.

IMO it's safe to say that being a horseman, perhaps more so than any vocation I've ever seen, is TRULY a labor of love!
