Why wasn't Bodexpress considered a non starter?
Its clear the starter still had a whole of him when the gates opened. If we are playing everything to the letter of the law whether is a Maiden race on a tuesday or a Triple Crown race shouldnt Bodexpress tickets been refunded?

If you see the "slow motion" view from the front, check out the reaction to the starter as it happens.. He kind of KNOWS he screwed up...

You guys are fixating way too much on the starter reaction.
EVERY STARTER has a hold of their horse as the gates open...if they didn't, they would be psychic...
So yeah, there's that.
Just stop already.
Maybe the starter's reaction was because JV fell off? Ever think of that? Maybe he had a bet on him. I know I did. I had the same reaction.

Yeah, I think he thought he was helping out by holding on when BE started rearing then thought he'd made things worse when JV hit the ground.

He caused his own trouble. The skies were clear so it was a fair start.

I'm gonna have to change my mind. Starter did hold on too long.
If you check out the horse, he came out banging into the side of the gate as well, but the starter had no hold of the horse unlike what was going on with Bodexpress.
Whether or not that caused Bodexpress to do what he did and dump JV, who knows...guess it could have gone either way in the Steward's heads, as it often does.

I must say I am starting to have a strange affection for this horse. A few maiden races, second in a derby prep, a front row seat to the "incident" in the Kentucky Derby and a DNF in the Preakness while circling the track twice!! Quite a resume for a horse that is still a maiden. I don't know what the future holds but I hope he wins something soon.

I thought it pretty weird that the inquiry only lasted about 60 seconds. Why not watch it a few times and talk to JV and the assistant starter?

Feel like the horse pulled his head down and left (or right from the jocks perspective) when the starter was trying to keep it straight, with that movement and the gate opening it seems like there was a slight delay. This is different then when a starter is holding the horse and does not let go causing the horse to rear. This horse brought on his own trouble and it was not caused by the starter holding the horse too long as the gates opened.

I'm with you. I've been drawn to the horse , maiden in a derby, etc.
I had him on a handful of tickets. Not enough to worry about except the starter definitely is an idiot and should die.

When the jockey was questioned he said the starter wasn’t at fault

That's a little harsh. I have had plenty of friends who work on gate crews and trust me you don't want the job. Getting to the track at 5am to work first time starters and runners on the starters list out of the gate all morning long and then working the card. Try it sometimes before you tell someone to die.
