Average Number of Starts

I remember when they used to say you needed a lot of seasoning to be ready for the 10F of the Derby. This year's field has an average number of starts of 5.65 with several as few as 4.

Last number of years starts is 2 or 3.
4 may be considered "too many" at this point.

Horses used to be a lot better than they are today.
Races more often, faster.

Today's owners are chickens - afraid to lose.
Most modern trainwer are 0's compared to the trainers of the 60s 70s.

They need small fields and stables of hundreds of horses to get their phony stats to where they are.

When breeding rights are being bought mere days before the race is run, i guess you can expect this. Used to be just a thrill to HAVE a horse make the gate in the Derby. Now the sundae must be served up with purchases of breeding rights, co-ownerships, etc.
