RIP Say Florida Sandy

Died Wednesday at age 24.
A very popular horse on the NYRA circuit in his day.

tom,

im not looking to hijack ur thread. u brought back memories of NYRA when racing seemed so much more romantic but I didn't want to start a new thread.

when I was in college, hate to admit but it was early 70's, the last race at aqueduct often would be a 2 turn starter allowance. a horse named sarre greene was often a big factor in those races.

sprint races at the big A would have to go through an allen jerkens trained runner named duck dance. a shipper from sulfolk named king elinol was the only horse I can remember outfooting him in the first quarter though it was always duck dance who would take charge.

any other runners from back in the day ? (not the stars dr fager, Damascus etc just the overnighters)

Dave's Friend, Trumpeter Swan....couple of old favorites.
Used to love the old starter handicaps.

Say Florida Sandy is one of the all time greats in my book! Raced 98 times, almost all of them stakes or allowance races. So many accomplishments!, such as: As an 8yo, raced 12 times and earned over $200K.

Seen wistfully from our current era filled with one-hit wonders, here's what the resume of a real race horse looks like:

How about Little Miracle, Creme De La Fete, and the immortal Yudy Eye?

Say Florida Sandy's racing career spanned all of my high school and college years. What a war horse. RIP, old boy.

Hard to believe Say Florida Sandy was 24 already! I saw him race many times. NY bred, right?

He must have been running about the same time as Topsy Robsy.

Topsy ended up at MNR in a $4,000 claiming race. I knew he was fast in his day. I wanted to claim him, but our trainer was afraid to. I should have insisted. I would have given him a long break and brought him back slowly.

At his peak I thought his trainer Gasper Moschera would enter him in the BC Sprint. Maybe he wasn't nominated.

Lots of good horses back then. Fabersham comes to mind. Flat Fleet Feet. Wild Wings was unbeatable on the inner dirt at AQU.

Don't forget Fourstardave -- a Saratoga legend.

So many good ones. Sad to hear about them passing away.

Say Florida Sandy

One of my favorites .

Had the good fortune of meeting Sandy Bacon 2 years ago, spent several
hours discussing SFS and several other horses he owned and has bred.
