No chicanery. Somebody bet $2,500 on #3 early in the betting. The correction bots (the ones that scrape every pool at every track and make sure nobody can get an overlay by what the bot believes the odds should be) put $2,000 on $2 (2-1 MLO) and about $1,000 on #5 (3-1 MLO) at closing to correct the prices. This happens all the time.
I remember Ernie Dahlman saying he did this often at small tracks to discourage others from betting on the same horse. That was even before the CRW days.

You got 8/5 on what would have been a 1/5 shot, you beat the whales on that one. These syndicates betting the late money aren't always right.
