This is precisely why the ultimate step will be the "single payer" insurance everyone has been talking about.

As long as there is another viable option, why would a doctor or hospital take a reduced rate as long as there is plenty of business at the full rate?

The answer is that they wouldn't.

So, next comes the law that says, "If you are a hospital you have to agree to our rate schedule."

Oh, wait. They can't do that. After all, the medical industry has a lobby.

The consumer only has AARP. LOL

AARP is acting like a union for old people, but the union leaders are doing very well.

A lot of people are not happy with AARP's medicare supplement plans. The auto insurance plan is on the other hand is well run.

AARP is far from perfect, but is the only group out there standing up for senior citizens. Anytime something comes up in congress, seniors are the first ones thrown under bus. I know some of you who are younger don't think about what is going happen when you turn 60. Let me assure you that your world changes and it ain't for the better. The list of things that change is endless and starts a lot of the time with how you treated on your job. Age discrimination is rampant.

I'm 63 and I have no use for AARP.
They can go to Hell - they don't represent me.
I will give up my SC discount rather than deal with those low-life sell outs.

Their primary function is to sell their members something. If they occassionaly do something that helps seniors, it is by accident, not by design. I get just as good or better deals through my AAA as I would from AARP. Their ideology is far left, they have heavily endorsed ObamaCare, which stands to make them a fortune, and they are pro gun control. No thanks.
