Ny Racing and heat wave
Not for nothing, today's heat, while unpleasant. wasn't much different than
many of the racing days I've experienced at Saratoga.
Wonder how this scenario will play upstate with fans and owners when
Saratoga opens, especially with competition from MTH, with
"balmy" weather..

I think NYRA acted responsibly with the weather conditions. I could only imagine the heat (LOL), they would have taken if they raced during these conditions and their were a slew of heat related problems with the competitors both human and equine.

Believe me it wasnot " balmy " at Monmouth, I was sweating, free fall there , and i thought it would be cooler there too. This kind of heat is not kind to man or beast and they did the right thing IMHO.in cancelling at Belmont, Philly, Delaware et al.

I couldn't agree more with NYRA - and other tracks - to cancel during this heat wave. It's incredibly dangerous for the horses.
One thing all tracks that race in warm weather need is fresh, cold water available around the track or at least on the far turn where horses pull up. There is usually a hose around the winner's circle but sometimes a horse pulls up in distress galloping out and needs cold water immediately - not just when they come back to be unsaddled.

Horses should not be running in 101 degree heat.

What if they were only allowed to canter?
I agree though. The heat has been downright oppressive. It wouldn't be fair to the animals.

for the record,I'm not knocking the decision, just saying Saratoga
can run high temps as well, and the Horse always comes first!

They did the right thing...IMO, no one should complain about canceling due to weather...and remember, a horse's normal internal temperature is around 101...give or take a little...they don't deal with extreme heat very well...much better to be safe than sorry.

Exactly. Our body temperatures are 98.6 degrees, and there are very few people here who would want to walk, let alone run, in that.

It was like an oven outside on Wednesday, NYRA made the right call. Can't people find something else to do for one or two days?

Correct. It was the week before I went up on vacation to the Spa. The weather the week before and after was attrocious.
Oh, in 2000 my buddy and I flew up on a Thursday in Mid- August. It was 100 degrees here at 3pm, our flight time.
The entire East Coast was under the spell of a brutal heat wave.
That day racing was cancelled at Saratoga due to excessive heat.
We did go to the track the next day it was a bit cooler. The high that day was 96. Happened to be the hottest day of the year in Upstate NY.

not trying to beat this topic to death, but I would appreciate anyone
knowledgable about Standardbreds to answer if race cards have been cancelled due to extreme heat as happened earlier this week.
