yes it really happened - this barroom brawler tough guy actually knocked Muhammad Ali down - I'm pretty sure Joe Frazier was the only other one to ever do that

pretty amazing for a ham and egger with no impressive rep at all

Ali may have only been knocked down one other time, but I am fairly certain that Cassius Clay was knocked down a couple of times as well early in his career.

All I remember is Wepner was a bloody mess when the fight ended.
Ali was knocked down by Henry Cooper before he was champion in their first fight. Cooper had the best left hook in boxing history imo. He couldn't ever go long though because he cut so easy. Both fights against Ali were stopped early. Cooper's face looked awful in each.

Wepner was tough.
Club-fighter tactics or not, he 'scored' a knockdown vs. the greatest.
And he was tough to knock out. Ali had to drag him to the deep end.
