Itis not only demographics. The last election showed several GOP weakness. Some of their ideas are out of touch with a lot of Americans. They also ran some very bad candidates. Their presidential candidate was one term governor who lost his home state in a landslide. What that tell you. They had a couple of senate candidates that some funny(to say the least) about rape. To win the Republican party needs to come up with better candidates. Then they need to get in touch with in touch with a larger group of America. Running a token minority with ideas that he does not share with his ethnic group anymore won't work anymore. As a democrat, I hope the republicans continue on the course they are on. I love it every time somebody like Sarah Palin appears on TV. They turn more independents to democratic voters than anything the democratic party could possibly do.
In the weak economy that we have now for the GOP not lose the presidency but senate and house seats is amazing. This should have been a GOP landside. (I guess people still remember the last GOP president and the shape he left the country in.) If they couldn't win in 2012, what chance do they have in 2016 when the economy will be in a lot better shape.
The good thing for us democrats, the GOP doesn't seemed to learned a thing. I still have word from them about people who draw a pay check. They only talk to the bosses. There are a lot more employees than bosses. Until the republicans figure that out, they will keep losing elections. The birth control pills being covered by insurance showed that. Romney and the GOP took the side of a few bosses and Obama and democrats took the side of the female employess. Who do you think got more votes from that issue?

we have a local radio host here named Charley Jones. Even in his younger liberal days his opinion on immigration from Mexico and other Latin Amer countries was that "we're inviting poverty by allowing these people across our borders without screeining"

His stance then, as a liberal, and now as a Con, is that people looking to come into the US need to pass a test --- what do they do for a living? Can they contribute to society?

Now we have what Jones predicted---- immigrated poverty. A lot of these illegals have gamed the system to get food stamps, welfare etc. It's one of the pieces of the monster that's bankrupting our system.

Keep your simpleton charts and lib websites to yourselves. I see it on a daily basis here. Companies in many industries "go cheap" and hire these people for 1/2 the salary to do the same work, usually at lower quality of output....go to any Dallas County grocery store and you'll find people that don't speak English whip out their (Lone Star) food stamp card.

Something has to be done. Not "needs" to be done

Screw the electoral side of things concerning immigration. The financial blood letting is killing the nation

Excellect comments by Steyn, who dares to call it like is is. Of course the Left will scream that they are "racist". Steyn and others have pointed out the perils of Balkinization and why "diversity" and "multi culturalism" is so bad for our nation.

Teddy had it RIGHT.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

I agree with everything except the part about there being only room for one language in this country; the English language.

This entirely American notion that they should only speak one language is beyond ridiculous to me. What could possibly be wrong with being fluent in a second language?

Of course...this might be asking too much from citizens the majority of which appear incapable of mastering their own language.

Multi-languages divide, not unite.
We are supposed to be a UNITED states.
No way you have a second language that doesn't compete with the main one.

Why stop at one second language, why not three, four, ten.....the more you divide the communication, the more you dived the people.

Decent piece that dovetails well with the one from Steyn

Exactly right! This is why I refuse to call black Americans "African-Americans". If their first allegiance is to the continent of Africa, then they should join their ancestors there. A house divided against itself is doomed to fall, and all this politically correct, racial-ethnic divide in this country is a huge contributing factor to the inevitable.

Tell it to people from Alabama. I born and raised in the USA. Never even so much as visited another country, yet I can understand a word the people from Alabama say. They can't be speaking English.

Think again if you believe the economy will be in a lot better shape in 2016. A lot of pain and suffering is on its way, I'm sorry to say.

This line resonated with me from the Steyn piece:

"Indeed, I notice that many of those exulting in the inevitable eclipse of “white America” are the same people who assure me that demographic arguments about the Islamization of Europe are completely preposterous."

That brings to mind the following tale about a Time Machine.

Barack Obama and David Cameron are shown a time machine which can see 100 years into the future.

They both decide to test it by asking a question each.

Barack goes first.

“What will the USA be like in 100 years time?”

The machine whirs and beeps and goes into action and gives him a printout, he reads it out "The country is in good hands under the new president, crime is non-existent, there is no conflict, the economy is healthy. There are no worries”

Cameron thinks “It's not bad this time machine, I'll have a bit of that” so he asks:

“What will Great Britain be like in 100 years time?”

The machine whirs and beeps and goes into action, and he gets a printout but he just stares at it.

“Come on David” says Barack, “What does it say”

David replies,

“Buggered if I know. It's all in Arabic!”

Imagine if the 100,000,000 non-voters turned out.
Would have really been a landslide election.

If a foreigner wants to come to our nation, then it is their responsibility to assimilate. Our part of the deal is to accomodate them, while they must accomodate our culture. (language being an inherent part of culture) Why should they have their cake and eat it too?
