Olympic medal count.
I’d like to start a discussion of which country is “winning “ the Olympics. Currently the United States has the most overall medals with 31, but Japan has the most Gold. Most news sources say the US is winning, but that would mean that finishing third is just as good as finishing first. An idea I will strongly support when I present my win ticket on a horse which finished third.
On the other hand just counting gold medals diminishes the accomplishment of those who finished second and third. Years ago, some newspapers had a points system. 10 for Gold 5 for Silvet and 2 or 3 for Bronze. What would you think of such a system now? What values would you assign each medal and why?
Then there is the question,”Are all gold medals equal?” Vastly more countries (and people) participate in Track and Field, Swimming,Gymnastics, Soccer and Basketball, than participate in aArchery, Tae Keon do and badminton. Why should all those Sports have Gold Medals of equal value?

You seriously can't have a woke Olympics and then place different value on different sports.
Also lots of Bronze medalists identify as Gold medalists, so it's basically the same thing.

Not sure if it is the same now but back in the day, first was worth 5 points, 2nd worth 3 points, and 3rd worth one during team track meets in High School and College. That works for me.

4 points for gold, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze.
And then divide each country's point total by the number of their competing athletes.

Would you consider a team sport such as Basketball or soccer as one participant or many.
I would say one because there is only the possibility of winning one medal.

How about any athlete who protests against their country during the Olympics gets zero points for any medal they or their team win.

They would not care as long as they had their time on the podium to disrespect the flag. Damian Lillard of USA mens basketball even said the other countries are tough opponents because the NBA players they have play extra hard when representing their countries due to pride. What does that say about our players?

You are correct about the Consensus points being 5 for 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd but if you had a best bet then it was 7pts.

Looks like track meet scoring changes with the amount of teams now, looks like the system I mentioned is only used when there are 3-4 teams.
