Vulnerable Favorites

Someone asked in another post how to identify losers. I'll share my 2 cents worth, though I may be overestimating my value .

I make over 90% of my plays in races I feel the favorite is vulnerable. The others are races where I think the favorite would have to fall down to lose AND I don't like the 2nd or 3rd choice to complete the exacta.

Here is a list I use to deem a favorite as "vulnerable". These only apply to favorites, not others I may bet.

I'd love to hear some new ideas on these favorites.

1. Weak pace or speed figures-with the proliferation of good speed figs today, most of these fall in the pace fig department.

2. Closers on dirt-I mean the deep closer type, and I don't care which track or distance, these are bad bets.

3. Frontrunners in turf routes-I mean E types, same as above, any distance or track.

4. Horses dropping in class off a good effort, helps to be familiar with the trainer.

5. Horses stretching out for the first time after being successful sprinting. Few horses are good at both.

6. Male horses whose last race was bad without an obvious excuse. I don't know why, but it doesn't seem to apply to females.

7. Horse claimed from a high % trainer to a low % trainer. It amazes me how fast these horses lose there "form".

8. Horses drawn outside with a short run to the turn. Know the track configuration where you play.

9. Stakes horses obviously prepping for later, especially in sprints.

10. Stakes horses entered at the last minute due to a change in plans. You have to follow the news to get these, but You and Bonapaw are 2 recent examples that jump to mind immediately.

You covered it pretty good. You have incorporated my special which is trainer change fron good to bad. That is my best.

Since I play mostly So Cal races this is easy.

My favorites

-- top speed in the race, off a huge number, back within 2-3 weeks. (unless trainer has shown success doing that before , ie., he knows the right drugs to use)

-- E horse in race with lots of front-runners and he won't get the lead.

-- "Sucker" horse. See Lorraine's Secret at NYRA tracks.

-- Cousin of the above. Lost as favorite several times in the past.

-- Jockey and or trainer are in a huge slump.

Here are a few types of favorites I usually look to play against:
1: 1st time starters. Flashy pedigree is nice, but not at short odds. Give me a horse with some experience and a little bit of ability. If all those who have run stink, give me a firster with juicy odds.
2: Claimers coming back from a layoff. Or, for layoffs in general, speed horses coming off the shelf and running in a race that looks to have a solid pace.
3: 5yos or older trying to go a mile or longer for the first time.
4: Stakes horses on dirt trying turf for the first time. Almost always overbet, even if they have lousy turf breeding.
5: Almost any favorite in the last race of the card

Talking My 2 Cents......

...and after yesterday, 2 cents is about all I have left!
I hate favorites with seconditis, like 23 2 7 5
Another one is a horse who did not win in the last 1o races, or one who did not finish 1 or 2 in one of the last three races.

About to post this and then I saw you had it, Andi. That is my favourite one. I've collected some real nice ones just based on this.

some of mine are data specific but a couple

clm field >7 MLO >=3-1

Bad trainer. Bad trn/jky. Sat. the public bet down a horse to 2-1. The trainer was 95-0 life time. Why did everyone think he was going to finish the day 96-1. I don't know. But I cashed a nice 9-1 against him.

Sometimes I just stand thier shaking my head.

CLM, Won (or even close) and layoff >=30 days. (especially with drop in class)

Negative "key races" for three year olds.
If a race has been run and a couple of the runners come back in seemingly good spots and run out.......be very suspicious of others in that field, including the winner....learn to identify these "weak" fields....they are more valuable than the positive key races.

I like to bet against the E horse favorite in an E-E-E Fast Race.

I like to bet against a favorite that improved his best life time speed figure by 7 lengths or more last race. 4 yo & up only.

Now those suspicious drop-downs , I bet against them often, but they seem to burn me much too often. Inow try to avoid races like that unless I have a very strong opinion on another hoss.

European import or from anywhere for that matter that fires big & wins 1st start in the states.

Usually overbet next out & fail to find the winner's circle.

Prime example Java in the 8th race yesterday @ Santa Anita.

Another I watch for

Expensive purchase in the sales ring given one try @ the MSW level then dropped in for a low claiming tag.

Even though Goal($600,000 in for $32,000) was not the fav in the finale @ Santa Anita yesterday, he did take quite a bit of money(WPS pools, pick 3,4 Daily Dbl). Which was fine by me - I wasn't going to play him.

This is what I do, rank my horses in each race, if the favorite is not in my top2 then I say it is a mild false favorite...if it is not in my top 4 then it is a super false favorite.

For Philly today, this is what I have a my false favorites.
1pha8
2pha7
5pha9
7pha4
10pha9

Now watchem all win...lol
