But I'm not betting on it
He has no works showing since his last and has had foot problems. They considered retirement for this horse also...NO WAY he's 100% fit for this race.
He may win it anyway, but the Riggatieri horse could be trouble.

EDIT: Of course I see now that the only other possible speeds in this race are scratched...the 1a-6-7 are all out and RR probably gets an easy lead again.

Do the 2, 4, or 5 have any realistic chance to upset the top 2?

2 GOLD CASING
4 GRUNWALD
5 SARGE'S

Do any of them match up on paper at all?

At one point on the second turn I thought the #1 had dead aim on him and there were enough others horses close and making a move that he was probably beat, but he still had plenty in the tank and came home quite well. Amazing consistency.

Maryland racing always has a ton of scratches so this may be par for the course, but i'm convinced he would have been beaten today with some early pressure from one of the scratched horses.

lets put it this way, if there is more than 1 horse that has any speed at all for the fist quarter of a mile, or if the one other speed that might be left has more early speed than rapid redux, the horse gets scratched.

as good a trainer as riggy is, those type of horses are not going to pass redux 100 yards away from the wire, you got to get him by the top of the lane to beat him. when redux sees the finish line he don't let nothing get in front of him!

This was a few weeks ago, but some troubling things in the article.

http://www.paulickreport.com/news/ra...d-by-stewards/

Scratches have been common features during Rapid Redux’s winning streak: There have been 40 runners scratched across the 20 races – more than 30 percent of the entrants – and the fields have averaged less than 5.5 horses.

Rigattieri's other horse doesn't have any more early speed than Awesome Rhythm, who is not as fast as RR, and it's not surprising that Rigattieri would run one or the other but not both.

If either the #6 or #7 had stayed in the race they would've been 50/1; both are hopelessly outclassed at that level. The #7 is a late runner while the #6 doesn't have sprint speed anything like RR's and his last-out win came from chasing the pace, not setting it, against far weaker competition.

So I don't think the scratches altered much in terms of the way the race played out, and I certainly don't think there was anything conspiratorial about them.

You don't think the only other horse with any early speed scratching out altered the way the race played out? How could it not?

The 6 scratching allowed Rapid Redux an uncontested lead. Most horses are going to run better uncontested, instead of having a hopeless longshot lapped to their outside.

You can't take away his consistency. But the behind the scenes stuff is unfortunate.
