Apologize to WHO?
What is UP with the American public's OBSESSION with being apologized to?
The latest mea culpa for us to stick our noses in the air and feel superior about comes from poor Michael Phelps. Note to the 6'5 human 'flipper' : Dude, don't apologize to me. You didn't DO anything to harm or injure me. It's not my business that you were dumb or depraved enough to suck on a bong. If you were under 21 and me your guardian it might be different. Or if I've at some point been elected president of your life, but missed the news flash, again, apology accepted. Otherwise, don't humble yourself by saying you're sorry to me. And I'm not 'dissapointed' in or surprised by your actions either. The reason for that, Mr Phelps, is that, unlike some people, I never equated athletic excellence with moral virtue or good character. You swam fast and showed heart. You made me proud to be an American, and that was enough. You never promised-or needed to promise-me that you would live your remaining days in exemplary fashion. And since I didn't rush out the minute Kellogg signed you and buy up mass quantities of cornflakes (actually, I prefer honey-bunches), I don't think you owed me much on the endorsement front either. In fact, by my tally, maybe I owe you for your historic achievments at last summer's olympics. So don't apologize. At least not to me.

I think his target audience for the apology is probably kids and parents of kids who thought he was a good role model. Their mistake for holding him up. Not his.
Weed should be legal anyhow.

I've never equated pot smoking with lack of moral virtue, or poor character.

Sometimes I go months here before reading something worthwhile or original --- thanks Mountainman.
Hell Mike comes off as a troll lately.

Thanks very much. Most of my posts are intended to spark debate. My late father phrased that differently. He once said that I'm a born agitator who loves to argue.

Thanks for the chuckle. I was surprised myself when that word came out of my keyboard. Sometimes even I don't know whether I'm being sarcastic or playing it straight.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa * 3.65 * 10**8 .
There, that ought to cover it.
Now let's move on.

"Say it Ain't So...Mike"
Mike Vaccaro in the NY Post compared the letdown in America over Phelps to that of Shoeless Joe Jackson!
http://www.nypost.com/seven/02082009/sports/moresports/phelps_image_takes_a_hit_with_young_fans_154111.htm
To his credit, when I sent an E-mail back admonishing him for making a mountain out of a molehill, he replied within a few hours.
GONE TO POT: Michael Phelps (above), hero and role model? After the golden-boy swimmer's marijuana incident, Jeremy Frank, father of three young girls, said, "If you can't let your kids believe in this guy, who do they believe in?"
