Ferndale - Humboldt County Fair

Hey People!

One of the most enjoyable and unique county fairs in the United States gets underway this Friday for two weekends. Ferndale, in Northern California, and of course the home of the Humboldt County Marathon.

I have really enjoyed working the meet the past two years and am looking forward to returning there. The little town of Ferndale is so beautiful and there is always a great atmosphere in the bars on Main Street throughout the meet.

Cooler temperatures as well! Will be in the mid 60's for opening weekend! Let us know if you are coming out and Let's say Hi!

Ricky Blind Dog will have his best bacon bet each day on my Twitter feed: @callstheraces The Handicapping Hound picked a $9.80 winner at Del Mar on Saturday - horseplayers that know seek the power of the paw!

I just saw that the Ivanhoe is temporarily closed.

Too bad.

They have a sauteed shrimp appetizer that is the BOMB!

Ferndale is wonderful. Little tracks like that are a tonic for all that is wrong in horse racing.

I always loved the Cali fair circuit, sad that half the tracks are gone since I started betting. In person I have only been to Pomona (Fairplex) and Pleasanton. Remember when they had an Orange County Fair meet at Los Alamitos?

I know this is out of anyone's hands that posts here, but I really miss the mule racing at the CA Fairs.

Loved Ferndale when I visited in 1999. Want to go back some day.

Any idea why there are no more mule races anywhere? Regulations changed? Something else?

With GG going away, maybe Fer will be the simulcast host for both weeks of their live meet and thus be on more solid fianancial footing.

The jackasses are no longer attracted to the horses.

Yeah, there were fewer and fewer mules each year. The economics of racing them couldn't be very good. It was a short season and the purses were small. I doubt many owners broke even.

I loved it anyway.

I had trips and my own figures for every mule for a bunch of years, knew the trainers, and had a few good angles. The pools were so small, even I moved the odds from time time to time, but I still found good value and did well every year.
