Just watched "The Killing" again, and remembered that the Jay C. Flippen character bet $5 on every horse in an eight horse field for a much larger purpose. The 10-1 horse won, he cashed it at Elisha Cook Jr.'s window.

I have answered this question before, but I will answer it again. I choose the race that is starting in about a minute or a few minutes.

Yeah, I played only the Longshots a few races today, and lost. I lost about $30. Serves me right for only playing the Longshots in races. :/ One of the Longshots was 50 to 1 . Had that Longshot won, I would have had a $20 profit.

Every bet you make in racing should at least pay for itself. Say you have a field of 10, and you decide that you are going to bet six horses. Then you must make sure that EVERY horse you bet is at least 6-1.
No sense using a 5-1 in your six-horse dutch, because if it wins, you still lose money. You can also include other bets in that race such as an exacta, as long as that exacta wins enough to cover your outlay.

I lost my money playing only the Longshots the other day, so today, I played only the Favorites, and... Lost my money when none of the Favorites won. What a Catch-22.

You have to have an "angle." Do you have the past performances? Once I went through a period where I classified longshot winners into categories. I found that most of them did something different from their last race, such as a new jockey, new surface, or different distances, post position, etc.

I'm thinking of putting Win, Place, Show on each of the horses for 8 horses, so $24 bet and hope the Longshot wins.

The only time that strategy ever works is the Kentucky Derby. But don’t bet every horse, take the longest odds of 1/3 of the field. Put 5 to win on each horse, should be around 6 for a 30 dollar win bet. It’s paid off fir me many times. Google Giacomo if you are new to racing.

My logic is simple. KD fields are large, lots of horses being tested for first time, things happen, nobody really has an inside edge at who most likely will win. So the odds reflect that. That system is attempting to take advantage of that lack of concentrated betting knowledge. That plan at an everyday track will ruin anyone.
