I've met him at contests and have to agree with your assessment. Difficult for this guy to be a spokesperson for the industry.

Recalling the Jill Byrne brief interview, he disdains mandatory races in the contest and prefers finding longshots anywhere. He had a phenomenal first day at contest, accruing more than $200 in 2wp format. Nearly caught at completion of 2-day contest. Better to be lucky than good.

It should have been Pick 'em Charlie of the Chi-Town Gazette. He picks both horses and handicappers.

The fact that the guy won it almost a year ago and it was heavily covered back then by the NTRA and DRF may have something to do with it...

I will try again....please explain to me why I am misreading this as a swipe at Steve Crist.

Ok, I think I understand part of what I was missing. Brian Troop won the tournament almost a year ago. The next tournament for 2011 honors (after the very recent Eclipse Aware presentations) is on Jan 28th-29th. So that he won is nice, honorable, but old news. I'm surprised-if they're going to give out an Eclipse Award for Handicapper of the Year and capiatlize on the recent notoriety (along with the other award winners-being announced for first time at the banquet), it winner should be decided fairly close to the award ceremony, not 11 months later. Good thing they make the trophies closer to the event - otherwise he'd have to polish the trophy after an 11 month wait.

OK, so what is your alternative? Should this person not be honored because of the timing?

An awful lot of misplaced, and unnecessary, griping if you ask me. There is plenty wrong but this sure doesn't seem like one of those cases. If you look hard enough you can find fault with just about anything.

I think an Eclipse Award for this kind of thing is misplaced to begin with.

That's probably a minority opinion in these here parts, but it seems lazy and redundant to me; a bone thrown where no bone needs to go.

I am truly amazed by this sentiment. You read a great deal around here about how poorly horseplayers are treated, and ignored, yet your post suggests that this recognition of horseplayers is " misplaced to begin with. "

It's a symbolic gesture to recognize horseplayers, in a setting where they were previously ignored, and the best possible representative is chosen each year, the person that won a handicapping tournament comprised of handicap tournament winners from throughout the year. Nobody, including the winner, is saying this is the best handicapper in the country, but he ( or she ) stands that year for the backbone of this game....the horseplayer.

And, yet, you think the award is misplaced. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I find this one pretty darn surprising.

Lots of horseplayers think it's a bogus award. Right of wrong, they consider contests a crapshoot. Plus, handicappers are notoriously reluctant to give credit to peers. Handicappers compete in the same pools, and many revere only themselves.

It's not just that....if the winner of the tournament is the automatic Eclipse winner, just give him an Eclipse trophy right then and there. Why wait 11 months? Not every Breeders Cup winner is an Eclipse winner, although it often seems that way. But it's not automatic.

But the basis of my point is my belief that handicapping is a lonely pursuit. The odds and the resulting payoffs are the result of hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands of individual decisions; nobody, when they approach the window to make a wager, is thinking, "I hope this elevates my standing as a horseplayer."

I know as well as anyone that the bettor is the backbone of the industry; but that's not what the Eclipse Awards are about. Leave it to the horsepeople; it's for them, not for us.

Consider?

If someone picks 4 4-1 winners in a row (which is a 624-1 chance), he is behind someone who picks a 25-1 (which is a 25-1 chance) and also has 3 less picks remaining.

It's kinda like a golf tournament only counting hole-in-ones.....A bowling tournament only counting 7-10 split conversions.....A poker tournament only playing 20 hands to completion......A football game being decided by the coin toss......etc.

Crapshoot is when the format requires that the only possible winning strategy is to do something other than what the entire contest is based on.

This thread is insane. Absolutely insane.

The horseplayer is recognized at the year-end awards presentation that honors the sport's best in various facets.

It's fantastic that Crist and the DRF originated this and this thread is jammed with complaints.

If HANA was at the forefront of this award's conception and yearly presentation, would this thread look the same?

It'd be worse

I like the idea, but it is a horse awards night for owners. I am happy when any handicapper is recognized, and Brian (make no mistake) is an excellent handicapper, contest rules luck or not.

I agree. I think it was a great thing for them to do. Horseplayers should be excited about this.

You can disagree with the format all you want, but it's great that they're recognizing someone.
