Well...it's providing people with some sort of "excuse". It's hard to live life without an "excuse"...

I don't see anything like what you two are talking about. OP talked about only the printed PPs at one race book. Others have talked about getting free PPs or buying on line stuff. The only excuse I've seen is to make a snappy reply.

I think a horse shortage, runaway odds (up and down ) after a race starts and shitty prices due to many factors have run people out of the game.
The Alternatives to DRF are plenty………nobody is quitting for the reason postulated

I only bet when I'm at the the track, so I'd rather pick my own losers.
I've bought a few tip sheets in the past, but no more.
I'm a tight wad and I have fun.
I purchase the track race program and that's it.
i win once in a while. Sweet!

I understand the supposed "newbie" argument, but even giving them free pps probably won't help, at least pps as they now exist. Given this is a board theoretically populated by horseplayers, I'm sort of surprised people here don't have access to free pps?
Maybe I'm missing something.

I’ve been saying it for years. Instead of post count, your annual handle should be displayed when you post here.
I think it’d be quite illuminating.

Like impressive Toga performance?
Some people spent more on Racing Forms than you bet!
Run along Stubby, unlike you, I've got handicapping to do.

What's handle going to tell you? Maybe some people just have deep pockets.
All you have to do is stick out your neck and handicap a race or two. The way you go about your handicapping, and what you think is relevant, says a lot about a handicappers prowess.
Just my humble opinion.

I enjoyed that as well. I bought a system advertised once. To test it out I called and ordered a month of back issues. Received this huge bundle of Forms fastened with wire. If memory serves the system had too many rules but it wasn't too bad, losing around the track take or so for the month tested.

It was an exercise Tubby. The fact you couldn’t figure it out speaks volumes about how dumb you are.
Anytime you want to compare handle or ho heads up let me know.

plain and simple, the print edition of DRF is hardly worth the paper it's printed on, much less $11. Unfortunately a good bit of the blame for this is due to the current racing situation around the country. The two go hand in hand.
DRF would be absolutely more worth the asking price if the state of racing was better. Fuller competitive fields. At least 7 horse races. ten to twelve, ideally. not the current 5 or 6 in every race.
Like an above poster stated, the current conditions at some tracks would need to pay me $11 to handicap their race cards.
it has become a waste of time anymore to handicap most days. you start with 6 horses a race, and then with the vet scratches , trainer scratches, etc...
what's the point.
much more lucrative $ to be had with the gambling $ elsewhere.(DFS specifically)
then you got to deal with shit like what happened the first day of this past breeders cup when they don't even want to pay you when you pick the winners.
Or you end up losing for the day because the stewards determined that the winner you just hit might have cost a fading horse a minor placing.
Let's not even talk about the rampant cheating that has been going on for ever. race fixing, milkshakes, drugging, etc...
It's gotten to the point where this game is for entertainment purposes only. Unfortunately I was never in this game for entertainment.
It is looking more and more like I'm going to have to try out the product from Hong Kong.
