The Problem With Horse Racing

Like there's not enough. But the one continuous fixable problem lies in a perfect example race 6 SA today. The Tim Conway Cup. Music from McCale's Navy. Does anyone under the age of 65 even know or care? Way to cater to the younger crowd which you will need soon enough. Consistently catering to the fossils that are living by the hourglass is what brings smaller and smaller crowds to the sport. I was just at an offtrack facility for Friday Oaks day. Holy SH! They should have just set up an assisted living facility right next door. But the sport doesn't care it stays in the 50's and soon enough like everything in the 50's will be 6 feet under.

You can't ignore the older folks. They got most of the money.

Yes absolutely. But that thinking is static. The 50's and 60's are a set time frame. When today's youth becomes the older crowd why would they care to look at horse racing?

Come on...this was one race out of thousands...and it was named in memory of an "old timer" who has meant something to this game. The music was chosen because it was instrumental in the honored person's life...and no "modern" music could have been relied upon to deliver a similar message. The "young crowd" doesn't even know who Tim Conway was...so, what difference does the music make?

It is! You joke but thats what is needed.

Before people just call me a pessimist here is my way to fix racing.

1- create a national racing association like the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL. The biggest and best tracks. All the others can have their fair type racing but the racing association would be the cream of the crop. Full fields on weekends with rich stakes racing.

2- ok so now with a national racing association i would set up a points system for each class that would go year to year. Jan 1 to Dec 31 just like the age system today.

3- The only time you would have to retire a horse is Dec 31 of each year. Yes a horse can be injured but a medical team would determine that injury.

ok so thats just a few of many changes. Like I said I would make it like the NFL and my super bowl would be the Breeders Cup. Gotta get the young people involved and a kardashian cup hery maybe that is the new name for the breeders cup classic!

Look I love the Tim Conway humor and he deserves his day. I just think horse racing makes it a general theme of things.

Would the young people start flocking to the track if the music of Dr. Dre became the main listening attraction?

Even that's 20 years out of date Thask….Dr. Dre is 54.

But since Tim Conway just passed away, isn't that the explanation rather than some misguided marketing of racing to 80-year-olds?

The more I think about this the more money can be made. Kardashian D Cup day she shows up in something skimpy thats already bringing a big crowd. She is worth billions she would love the promotion as would the track obviously Santa Anita would rake with her followers. She could pimp her fashion stuff all day long make it like derby day only her clothing line would get pimped to shit. Sell this to TV hopefully one of the networks picks it up.

I really should get this off the ground.

See my Kardashian idea. We need to build on that.

I could be wrong...but I don't see it as "marketing to 80-year-olds". I see it as a tribute to a famous horseplayer whose main body of work took place many years ago...and it leaves me with no negative reaction whatsoever. When Don Adams died...some track somewhere probably played the theme music of "Get Smart" through its speakers...to the confusion of the younger crowd in the stands. SO WHAT.

None of those will bring in the young people.
The 18-34 crowd will show up if there is some other event happening at the race track, maybe a concert, food or beer festival, etc. You don't even have to look far, just look at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes for examples. Now that will probably only work during the weekend races, you still gotta bring in the weekday crowd, and thats where all the retired folks come in.
