He was moving well, but at the moment of the check, IMO he was not moving best. The winner was. If you want to argue it cost him more than a length, I'm OK with that. That's why I used "~". I don't think he would have won, but he is talented.
I don't know if he was struggling with the track. That's something that maybe JV would know, but I personally didn't see that (not that I'm especially skilled at it other than seeing blatant climbing). I saw him get out half step slow and have the horses inside and outside of him basically take away his path. So JV eased back.
Good to see on you posting on races instead of other things. We'll all learn more from stuff like this than what we did as teens.
