Whether Mendelssohn wins or not, betting him at 7/5 is insane.

Nice effort by Pattern Recognition.
If I had only seen the names in the results I would have thought it was a poorly run Cigar Mile, but that looked like a nice effort with legit times.
Surprised me.

Pattern Recognition - probably can't win today's race shape

Well, I guess he can with a ride like that.
That's how you win races - you ride like you're in a race.

I bet the 8 along with the 5 and the 1.
If that makes me a bad person, which I've been living with for a while, so be it.
I really thought Mendelssohn was the best horse in here, but I hedged out of respect for how often I make mistakes.

The cut back to a mile was not to Mendelssohn's advantage. He is just not suited to the faster pace scenario in 8 furlongs or less as today's Cigar and the Dwyer showed. He is probably better suited to 10 furlongs leading or pressing an honest but not hot or insane early pace. His best race was in the 9 1/2 furlong UAE Derby. Unfortunately, the poor horse has been getting hot or crazy pace scenarios lately, like in the JC Gold Cup and the BC Classic at the classic distance or extended sprint one-turn miles.

In addition, all the hard efforts and shipping he's done in the past 6-7 months have to add up eventually which made him a vulnerable favorite--never mind the post position, condition of the inside on the main track today, and the pace scenario.
With his moderate effort today I wonder if Coolmore will simply pull the plug and send him to the shed considering the press his half-brother (Into Mischief--see today's Remsen) has been getting all year. They've done so with similar colts in the past (Hold That Tiger, Johannesburg, etc.) so it won't be a surprise, but it will be a shame because the horse clearly has some talent that has not been realized as a result of chasing Kentucky Derby fantasies, consistently placing him at a distance likely beyond his reach (10 furlongs), and sending him back-and-forth across the Atlantic in a relatively short time frame.

They could advertise him as the Stallion to breed to if you are planning on shipping a lot.

I can one up that...
They can offer international door-to-door stud service: "Don't ship to us...we'll ship to you."
