No young or middle-aged person has died in the U.S. from Wu flu.
Almost all deaths occurred at the long-term care facility in Washington State, 77%.

We never should have placed so much reliance on China (for APIs) and India (for generics). Some supply-chain diversification is wise, but fully outsourcing key ingredients/end products was beyond imprudent.

That mistake is being corrected.

The last pandemic to hit the USA was the Swine Flu in 2009.

CDC says that virus killed around 13,000 people in the USA alone.

I don't recall people doing all the crazy shit they are doing now...I guess the stock market was already cratered from the housing crisis, so there's that...but we weren't suspending pro sports or telling people to stay locked up in their houses after hoarding supplies, nor were we closing schools or limiting the number of people gathering in public...

I guess Obama really was the better president.

Yahoo Finance Video•March 13, 2020:
https://finance.yahoo.com/video/dr-m...145547356.html

The impact of the coronavirus is continuing to escalate, and Johns Hopkins University Professor of Public Health Dr. Marty Makary says, "I think we have between 50,000 and half a million cases right now walking around in the United States". He joins Yahoo Finance's On the Move panel to discuss.
Watch the video.

Johns Hopkins University Professor of Public Health Dr. Marty Makary explains that our healthcare system has been operating at something close to full capacity - BEFORE the coronavirus outbreak.

He also explains that, like Italy, our healthcare system doesn't have the number of ICU beds needed to deal with a sudden spike in ICU patients.

FWIW, my takeaway is that the medical community realized pretty early on that, left unchecked, Covid-19 will spread around the world on an exponential growth curve.

I think our medical community is looking at the growth curve and is saying in no uncertain terms we need to flatten it.

Otherwise, our healthcare system could be overrun. (Just like Italy.)

Imo, if we had a vaccine things would be different. (But we don't.)

Without a vaccine how do we flatten the growth curve?

Shutting down direct air travel from China while they were in the middle of their outbreak was a way to flatten the growth curve here in the US.

Shutting down direct air travel from Europe while Italy is in the middle of their outbreak and the rest of Europe is in the early stages of theirs is a way to flatten the growth curve here in the US.

Canceling sports that draw a big crowd, closing schools, closing theme parks like Disneyland, etc. is another way to do flatten the growth curve now that we are in the early stages of our outbreak here in the US.

My thoughts for what they are worth.

Just went to get my morning refill of Dr. Pepper. Could not use my refill cup because of the virus. Glad I had the extra $.78 to spend.

The major problem in the mkts is the fed's balance sheet and the multiple rounds of quantative easing that stemmed from deregulation. (Not the virus) Want to talk about presidents... who enabled the deregulation? nope not him... go back a bit further. Want to talk about crazy... those subprime loans are happening all over again.. this time they're just calling them non-qualified loans.

yes, the virus maybe the lowtide that allows boats to scrape bottom.. but why are those boats so close to shore?

meanwhile back at the bat cave we're sending missles at the Iranians.

I don't recall seeing it on the news for most of the day during that time either.

Just a little perspective:

2018 US flu deaths = 62,000

2019 US flu deaths = 34,200

2020 US flu deaths = 40

Numbers from CDC
