Karma is a bitch. The “Racing Gods” gave the West’s the big FU! Looks good on them.

I didn't realize this at the time, but apparently the Derby DQ shattered an illusion people had about the Derby, that the stewards would "swallow their whistles" because of the importance of the event.

And a lot of racing fans hate stewards. That's the only explanation I have for this fantasy people have that the Wests' lawyers are going to get to cross examine the stewards.

This isn't just no-names on tbe Internet either. Even Andy Beyer apparently thought the Derby was different.

What this Derby did was shatter the bubble and make it clear that the Derby is like any other race and that sometimes a non-"best" horse will get moved up.

I never even heard of most of these horses in the Pegasus. Looks like horses from non-graded stakes type races, maiden claimers, and maybe a G2 winner thrown in there? Max would never have won the Belmont.

Does this mean he wasn't best in the Derby? Of course not

Folks are tickled by this result because Servis & West raised holy hell after the Derby and acted like children.
He had a bad start and was dogged the whole way. Looked like a short horse to me.

That is very unfair.

I like Max. He ran on the same track undefeated. I had wanted to see him in a variety of different situations and hope we get to see more In the Derby he weaved (for whatever reason) and crossed in front of other horses and got DQed.... that was the right race for needing some speed.

In the Pegasus, he got compression for the first time, i.e. he had to duel another pace presser, and he lost. But he gave a good account of himself and was brave.

All that means to me is that any horse can be defeated when they are forced to duel with another speedy horse.

There are always horses with a lot of early precocious talent who show up in barns all over the planet, but not all are owned by people like the Wests and/or thus don't get pointed toward big races like the KY Derby. (I thought Alwaysmining was such a horse. Nice horse. But put them up against the big leagues, top trainers and big money barns and you start to see the differences....)

Right now I would like to see more of what Max can do at different tracks this summer and Fall.

Short horse, but long face!

You are correct! I am tickled pink he lost because his owner is a big mouth.
And I still do not agree he was best in the Derby.
But I see why he ducked the Belmont.

Perhaps if MAX had been given a real WHO WANTS IT MORE call. like I deliver. he would have had a little more fight. Pretty weak when announcers at bigger and better tracks steal material.

He got a paid tuneup today and made some $$ for his owners.
He had to duel another horse eyeball to eyeball, and that stumble at the start probably cost him a bit
.
I'm not even a Max Security/West fan, but I have a real problem taking people seriously when their spitefulness/resentment psychology is stronger than their sense of FAIRNESS. Actually, I not only can't take them seriously, but I pretty much can't respect them, either.

By any objective standard, Max ran a good race today IMHO. He got beat by a horse who was better on the day, he got some pace compression and couldn't beat it.

He did stumble at the start. Incidents like that can have an effect on a horse later in a race.
