The salary of athletes in various team sports is insane.
I worked for over 40 years and my total income during that time might be about 3 million bucks, if that.
But sports is sports and McDavid is arguably the best hockey player on this planet.
I don't begrudge him or anyone else getting as much money as they can.
It's insanity though.
Then of course Oprah was making 87 million a year at one point.
That's insanity too.

How much cap space are you going to have after Draisaitl get’s a contract extension?
My only concern is whether you will have the cap space to put a contending team together, this is shaping up to be worse than what the Blackhawks have to deal with every season, a revolving door of support players. They couldn’t keep Panarin this summer, and i expect the same outcome every time Edmonton needs to re-up one of their rising players.
Don't get me wrong, McDavid deserves the money he is getting, but at the same time he is handcuffing the team with that contract.
I’m a little horrified at what will happen to the Leafs 2 years from now.

Yep. $$Auston Matthews$$ ca-ching ca-ching and others as they bloom.
Who knows? Matthews might demand more than McDavid and get it.

You might want to prepare yourself for the chance of Edmonton losing Draisaitl. If the reports of McDavid’s contract extension are accurate, other NHL teams will give Draisaitl an offer-sheet (which is perfectly legal but a dick-move just the same) of $9-$10 million, and the Oilers are SOL.
Assuming the player accepts the offer sheet, the team has two options. They have 7 days to make their choice.
The first option is to exercise their "Right of First Refusal". This means that they match the salary, term, signing bonus and reporting bonus of the offer sheet, and the player is considered signed. Additional terms such as no trade/no move clauses or performance bonuses are NOT included, but they can be negotiated separately. If a team exercises this right, they cannot trade the player for one year (to the day).
The second option is to let the player walk, and collect their compensation from the team that submitted the offer sheet.

Penguins close to making trade for center The Penguins expect to lose center Nick Bonino in free agency and are close to making a trade to fill the void he leaves on the third line, general manager Jim Rutherford said Friday morning. Rutherford said he expects defensemen Trevor Daley and Ron Hainsey to leave via free agency as well.

The Minnesota Wild will trade defenseman Marco Scandella and forward Jason Pominville to the Buffalo Sabres for forwards Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno, according to TSN.

Free agency begins. The money isn't the scary thing. It's term. Don't sign older guys to long contracts. Leafs, even though Shattenkirk isn't that old, please stay away. Be smart Lou. Good luck today.....

Leafs Shopping List
Back-Up = Curtis McElhinney – 2 year - $850K
4th Line Centre = Dominic Moore – 1 year - $1 Million
Right-Shot Defenseman = ??????
Solid cap friendly signings by the Leafs today.
I just want to congratulate the New York Rangers today, they got rid of one donkey on the back-end, and replaced him with another, well done! Some teams will never learn.

The Penguins lost another core part of their organization on Saturday afternoon when Chris Kunitz left to take a one-year, $2 million deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
