I just finished handicapping Saturday's Ellis card. Oh well.

I handicapped Thursday's Arlington card and didn't play a single race due to off the turf.

Since I handicap with pen and paper I did a lot of writing and figuring for nothing but practice.

So I don't run into the same issue I will not play Monmouth in case they cancel, which they probably should.

Monmouth's Dennis Drysen on with Steve Byk says card will run.
If they have to, they will move the post times back to run later in the evening.

Haskell could go after 8PM if need be.

Let the capping begin!

New Jersey’s marquee horse race remains scheduled to go on during a dangerous heat wave Saturday, but protesters and animal rights activists are sending a message: It’s too hot for horses. Officials from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals...

This seems reckless to me.

I understand they've planned for their biggest day, but I don't think moving it to Sunday would impact it too negatively. May even be positive. Hell if I'd go out to the track tomorrow in that kind of heat.

They can’t run in this heat. Call it now, move the Sat card to Sunday.
Until NJ voters finally passed a statewide referendum permitting pari-mutuel wagers to be taken on Sunday's, the Haskell was always run on a Saturday.
For several years, the Haskell was moved to Sunday. Presumably to avoid competing with Saratoga's Saturday Card.
Back to your idea. NYRA has moved Saturday's card to Sunday 7/21.
Who knows, perhaps Monmouth management is assessing the weather situation .
According to the forecast, tomorrow will be on the harsh side of brutal.
The NWS is calling for a high of 96 with a heat index of 107.
And excessive heat warning has been issued for all of New Jersey SE Pennsylvania, NYC, Long Island, and the lower Hudson Valley.

When lay people talk about humidity in summer, they often exaggerate the humidity by a few ahem......furlongs...LOL

"Real Feel"
TRACK/ SAT / SUN
SAR / 106 / 100
MTH /100/ didn't look

So according to "real feel" both tracks will run cards in 100, and Saratoga's Saturday is significantly hotter.

* I don't know anything about 'real feel' and whether it is even worth referencing.

"Real Feel" is something concocted by the folks at accuweather.
They devised a formula combining temperature, humidity and exposure to sun light.
Because weather instruments are normally out of direct sunlight, they provide readings not influenced by the ultra violet rays which can intensify the apparent temperature 'felt' by living beings.
I like it. We don't go outside and spend 'all' of our time out of direct sunlight

Heat index is 105 to 110 for Monmouth, it'll be hot.

PETA has now stepped in to pressure Monmouth to cancel, so we'll see how that goes. We all know horses dying in the heat would be yet another strike in the slow collapse of racing, and we also have all seen horses run in temperatures this hot plenty of times with no incident. I'm not taking sides, just reporting the news coverage here in NJ right now.

I have been to Monmouth on brutally hot and humid days before and no horses died or collapsed.

Nothing will happen tomorrow.

Much. Ado over nothing.

If the Haskell wasn't on the card, they surely would have canceled.

When I was a kid, I liked PETA.
"They help prevent animal abuse."

Then grew up and realized that they leverage animals for their own profit. I can't take anything they say seriously.

My opinion on running in this heat?? - I don't know. Outside my competence.

For the Haskell, I'll sweep the chalk away.
