Bettors pay enough already. They shouldn't be forced to pay one additional cent. If someone chooses to donate, great, but no forced donations.

Would you have any problem with an opt in/opt out switch on the ADW account setup page to facilitate a contribution like this? Or, on the self-service auto-tote machine an extra button to press at the end of the wager ticket?
I know, there is nothing stopping anyone from clicking through one of those many advertisements for horse rescue and contributing that way.

If any of the organizations are charitable organizations it would be better for the bettor to donate directly to receive the possible deduction on their taxes.

The thread and the poll kind of went where I thought it would. Some nice comments here. The way I take it is - we see nothing from racing on this but lip service, and it is and has been a problem for some time. Even if we have some way to contribute and want to, it will be messed up.
Look at slots jurisdictions. They write a slots deal where half goes to purses and half goes to profits - all a gold mine to those two stakeholders (and with higher purses, goes higher vet bills for them, and higher bloodstock prices for breeders). Where is the 1% to take care of the increased amount of horses that are being brought into the world because of this inflation? Where is the 1% for lower rake?
All very short-sighted, in my opinion, and emblematic that without someone guiding the ship and doing the right thing, these places are left (with kind people who work their ass off) to others and there is simply not enough of them to do the job right.

1% of every purse award taken out for this.
2% of every sale price.
5% of every claim.
10% of every graded stake purse. Black type = breeding incentive = more problem.
Not a penny from the pools.
I will decide when and how much I contribute to clean up the mess the industry has created for itself.

I'm not in favor of any of the mandatory options.
Every time I win a race (as an owner) or cash a large ticket (as a player) I donate to one (or both) of the following:
Remember Me Rescue
Burleson, TX
Mt Hope Horse Rescue
Manheim, PA

I give quarterly to the local Maryland Rescue outfit. I also on an irregular basis give to animal shelters and the Bear rescue in Tn. But I have to agree that owners and the industry need to be taking care of the this problem.

The hell with the horse, what we need is a retirement home for horse players.

In my opinion, the tracks and owners should take care of it. The issue with tracks doing it is that the cost will mosty likely be passed on to the bettors in some way. In a perfect world, owners would make sure all of the horses they own have safe homes on their own. Since it isnt a perfect world, the tracks should charge the owners a fee when they renew their license and have that money go to the retirement fund.

Damn.
Those 13 years went by really fast.
That said, I happen to know at least a handful of industry leaders saw this poll and the many other threads here on this site.
A select few took action, and the results of this poll were not lost on them.
Fast forward to present day and the industry in the US (while not perfect) does a much better job when it comes to thoroughbred retirement than it did when this poll was first posted.

I say make voluntary contributions easy to make. I always tipped mutuel clerks when I went to the track or book, I have even tipped people that were cleaning ash trays in casinos when I had a nice score. After a good day betting the ponies I would have no problem stuffing a $20, $50 or $100 bill in a Salvation Army type kettle to help retired race horses on the way out the door.
