It was (maybe still is) used to teach. My first introduction to coding was with Fortran (on punched cards). When I actually decided to get certified in software we began with PL/1 which I had never heard of before that and have not really seen since.
I have a good friend who made a very comfortable living writing Fortran programs. Of course, it helped that he is a genius and worked as an actuary for a group that advised big insurance companies. For handling math it's still pretty good.

When I first learned, it was Basic, then Fortran and Cobol, then Pascal. I haven't heard that one in a LONG time.
