Have a blast! Can't make it this year, wife just had hip surgery, but I had a great time the last two. Doesn't look to be too crowded based on the price of tickets on StubHub.

Crap damn crap !!
Went down with Thunder Snow in the Classic. If he runs 1st or 2nd we win a bundle on the tri.
Soumillion stayed a little too close to that hot pace and it compromised him late.
He was the only runner near the front that survived.
We REALLY like Thunder Snow today....got a great trip but couldn't get back off that pace ((

I'll give you the lowdown on how we did at the windows in one word:
Splat!

Swang for the fences and played tris almost exclusively. Kept missing the bombs that ran underneath....Chelsea Cloisters, Stellar Agent, Knicks Go, and frickin Gunnevera.
Liked Chalon but couldn't have Shamrock Rose if they ran that race ten times.
Went down hard in the Classic with Thunder Snow, who was my value horse of the whole wknd. The more I watch the replay the more I'm upset with Soumillion for laying too close to that hot pace. He got a dream trip and had 2nd place locked up, but he tired from the chase and Gunny caught him.
I hate that horse! He was my Derby pick in 2017 and has been woefully mismanaged in my opinion. The Dubai trip was just ridiculous, and I don't think he's a 10f horse. He's gotten lucky twice to catch a hot pace and clunk up for a non threatening 2nd (Travers). I think he's built more for the BrCup Dirt Mile, or the Cigar Mile, or Met Mile. Damn him! Lolol
I think it's no coincidence that I stopped making my own pace/speed
figs and the fact that we've struggled the last two years at Pim and now at CD.
It's not that my numbers are so good....it's the fact that by making figures, I'm forced to dissect every race of every day. The info you gain just by looking & paying attention is invaluable. You see track bias trends, horses that ran against the race flow and still performed well, and on and on.
It's time I started making my HumNums again.

A word about Churchill Downs.
As opposed to Pimlico, these folks really know how to do the big days right.
Helpful and KNOWLEDGEABLE staff.
Tellers who know how to punch a ticket.
Golf carts to shuttle you from your remote parking space in one of their many lots right to your gate. Very helpful since my father is now 78.
They even had a wheelchair to take him to his seat if he needed it.
Free giveaways at the Makers Mark wagon and at the bars.
Free Equibase programs (which are actually full pp's in booklet form)

All in all it was a great experience, even though our pockets got turned inside out at the windows.
Dad is getting older and I'm not sure how many more of these weekends we will have together. I speak for many of us when I say that just the act of handicapping the races alongside my father is a great time in and of itself.
They are the ones who first introduced us to this great game.
Winning suddenly becomes secondary, doesn't it?
