That's where I got mine.

Actually had 2 or 3 at one time.

Very Cool Dave.. A nice little Tchotchke or giveaway at the Race Track. Was it a giveaway item at the time?

Hey Dave!
Just came across this post embedded in a handicapping method thread.
Rats! Thanks for thinking of me though.
Yes, John Henry is my favorite. His hard luck background can match many other champions that had movies made about them. Poor breeding, (his sire Ole bob bowers) stood in my home state of Mich.) poor conformation, back at one knee, and inward on the other not to mention destructive around the barn as a youth.
I was on the finish line in the inaguaral Arlington Million. I swear that The Bart (40/1)beat him a head but JH won the photo to the delight of the overflow crowd at AP that day.

John Henry,

Sorry that the money clip got away. I just caved under the pressure of so many requests. LOL

I've never been a "big horse" guy. To me, it has always been about the betting.

But there are a handful of BIG HORSES that I really followed. (And all come with their own unique stories.)

John Henry was like the worlds' greatest never was story. (Can't really call him a comeback because he just came from nothing.)

Then there was Mr. Frisky - a less than memorable horse with a great story.

And, of course, the one-of-a-lifetime, Secretariat.

Hmm... I think I'll start a thread about great horse stories.

I heard of several stories of John Henry being that "horse with attitude" that makes many of them such special animals. I heard that if you got to close to his area of the barn you had to be constantly aware or on the lookout because he wouldn't hesitate to zip across the barn and butt into you to let you know that you were in his area or space. Evidently, he had that edge about him that made him such a driven and spirited horse which apparently carried over to many of his memorable performances on the track.

If Citation had been retired after his 3yo season he would be ranked with the all time greats. He became the first millionaire at the expense of perhaps being the GOAT.

Phil Georgeff has the best voice, sounds like he has added reverb.. We need new announcers. Im tired of plunking down a african or aussie with a accent and thinking were cool. Lets get someone like Phil back.

John Henry

I've been reading this today. Very good article on John Henry. Amazing story. I'm glad I got to see him race in person at Belmont.

Nice story, but at one point Haskin writes, He eventually would sell him to a Jewish bicycle salesman from New York named Sam Rubin, who when told he had bought a gelding, said, “What color is that?”)

What the hell does him being Jewish have anything to do with it? Nowhere else in the story does he identify anyone's religion or ethnicity. Why point out he's Jewish while making fun of him?

Steve Haskin himself is Jewish, so ...

Here is a rating which I have developed.

S-Factor = (Phi/n) *(Pr/Pl) *e^(A*F/n + B* R/nr)

I doubt anyone would want to use pen and paper to compute an S-Factor rating for each horse. Also some analysis is required to determine A and B. ...one can get very old fast doing analysis without a computer.

Alright what are the variables for the S-Factor?

Phi - Horse's odds in last race
n - # of runners in last race
Pr - Today's race purse
Pl - Purse last race
e - exponential function
^ - raised to the power
A - Constant to be determined
B - Constant to be determined
F - Finish in last race
R - Rank of average speed rating for the last two races
nr - # of runners in today's race

S-Factor -> The lower the better the rating.

How good is it? Test it yourself.

Mike (Dr Beav)
Is anyone using SFactor? Any suggestions as to a good value for A and B?

It is a straightforward mathematical formula. e is an exponential function commonly available in programming languages. ^ indicates the power to be used through the subsequent values in the formula. I really have no idea how he invented this formula.

I have implemented the formula using A=1 and B=1. It works better than I expected, though like many other math formula it is not a perfect standalone. But I was wondering if anyone had experimented and determined optimal values for A and B.

Did TrifectaMike pass? I haven't seen posts from him in a good while and he is not available through PM.
