Happy Bobby Bonilla Day

Bobby Bonilla's last day with the Mets was in 1999. Today he received his annual deferred salary of $1.193 Million. And he will continue to get a check for $1.193MM through 2035. Talk about a retirement plan.

This has to be one of the most interesting or perhaps infamous deals in sports history. The Mets actually thought that they were entering into a profitable deal due to their association with Bernie Madoff. The Mets' owners, the Wilpons, had accounts with Madoff that they thought were earning 10% or more per year. With the 8% that they were paying on the Bonilla deal they had a profit, right> WRONG! More at the link.

Another interesting deal, albeit on a much larger scale, was the one that the Silna brothers made with the NBA. They torched the league for many millions of dollars in what has been referred to as the greatest deal in the history of sports.

I remember reading about the deal the Silna brothers made. Absolutely crazy. At the time, everyone thought they got screwed. I believe the buyout some 40 years later was 200M+ if I am remembering correctly?

I'd totally forgotten about Wilpon's ties to Madoff. Thx for the Silna bros link. Never followed that before.
