No doubt about it...the USA is #1
I operate a grocery store in a predominently Russian, and to a lesser extent Polish, neighborhood. Over the past several months, an unusually large number of Ukranian people come to my store looking for a job. I have them fill out an application...and have hired several of them. Yesterday I happened to be in the store, and a Ukranian couple walks in and asks me for a job. The lady spoke adequate English, and she told me that they had migrated to this country 6 weeks ago. I gave them two job applications, and afterwards they took a shopping cart and started shopping in the store.
To my surprise, I soon discovered that they were filling the shopping cart to the brim, with little regard to the prices of some of the items that they were buying. When they brought the overloaded shopping cart to the register, I followed them out of curiosity...and I saw that the lady took a link (food stamp) card out of her wallet. With my curiosity piqued, I secretly asked my cashier at the register to check the Ukranian couple's link card balance after their order was rung up (the register systems allow that).
A short while later, my cashier comes to me and tells me that after paying for a $269 grocery purchase...the Ukranian couple still had about $3,000 left as a balance on their food stamp account. This was no great surprise to me, having seen such things several times in the past...but it amazed me that this immigrant couple had secured such a food stamp line of credit after being in this country for such a short period of time. And I wondered how many American citizens are in a position to shop in such an "extravagant" manner...during these turbulant times that we currently find ourselves in.
We truly are the most "generous" country in the world, in our treatment of our immigrant visitors...but I wonder aloud if this "generosity" is extended to our citizens, as well.

It's what happens when a country is $30 trillion in debt. I wonder if I can identify as a Ukrainian immigrant? It would seem easier than becoming a "birthing person".

I know nothing of EBT or food stamps, but I always thought the cards were refilled monthly, looks like that isn't the case or they always have a surplus.
I only negatively judge those people if they have a separate order for a matching amount of alcohol and smokes paid for out of pocket, so they are using the government to support bad habits. #2 that gets my goat is those that buy what looks like a cart full of party snacks and soda loaded with sugar. I mean you can buy a whole chicken or a bag of apples for the cost of the party sized bag of potato chips. I keep hearing poor people advocates
saying eating healthy is too expensive, I say BS, it just takes some effort.

I’d be willing to wager they’re getting a good chunk of change for clothing, rent, and all the free medical they can stand. I bet this is going on with the southern border trespassers as well.

they do get refilled monthly. I dated someone who was on EBT and, no joke, I never ate better. you CAN carry a balance and carryover unused funds month to month
your last line is Exactly right --- It takes effort. Most people don't care. Ever go to ALDI? They have great produce at fantastic prices. I've been eating more natural and homemade meals (not necessarily "healthier"...just made fresher and no added processing/freezing etc)...we are spending the same or less on groceries/eating out...and feel 100x better.

as far as thask's OP---they've been there 6 weeks. Who knows how many children are on their account....I am assuming they have no income.
I am unaware but also haven't looked at what benefits these migrants are getting right as they come in the country. but here are the guidelines: https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/recipient/eligibility
$3K? Did they put a household of ten people!!!???!??!

I go to Aldi's when errands take by them as they are 40+ miles away in any direction. I go to Food Lion mostly, they usually have several produce items on sale. Even with that practice which I never did before groceries are up 30-40%. Like all apples will be $2.99 except one or two kinds, I will get the $1.99 ones.

Aldi's is great. Name brands are starting to creep in though, along with their prices.
