Best Derby Field Since...

I think we can agree this is a special and intriguing Kentucky Derby field.

Full of anticipation, less answers than questions, and a number of very interesting horses.

Since the Derby field has reached its 20 horse capacity, has there been a field deeper than the one we have this year?

(1999 was the 1st time they tried to get 20, and 2005 was the 1st time we ever had 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby oh by the way).

Yep. That '13 field was loaded. One of the very best.

2015 maybe? At least going into the race anyways. That year almost half (8 of 18) the field had earned a 100+ BSF in their final prep with some other horses like Carpe Diem and Mubtaahij coming close.

I use Brisnet and have the Derby Pps back to 2000. An angle I like is E2 and LP both above 100. It has happened 25 times with 3 winners and 2 exactas (A couple others hitting the super).Regardless, this field has 4 double 100s plus horses like Mendelssohn, Vino, and Magnum that would be solid choices in a normal derby field.

The top two from both the Santa Anita and Florida Derbys by the looks of it. Vino Rosso came close with a 102-98.

Yes, that's right. He did earn those figures for the FOY win. That would make it 5 that fit unless MTB's angle he was referring is specific to final preps at 9F.

I'm always sanguine on declaring field talent before the fact, because it often only becomes apparent afterwards, also the rate of attrition from the derby is devasting. A horse you love going in, may never win again, or even race again.

For me, 2001 is very hard to beat in this century: Point Given, Congaree, and Monarchos. Songandaprayer's fastest half ever. Three Hall of Famers and two records.

History always smiles on 46, 1:09, 1:59; 47, 1:112, 2:03 not so much, despite how fast 2:03 is claimed to have really been. If these horses don't at least equal Nyquist's 2:01, history is not going to consider this derby one of the all time greats.

Point Given is largely forgiven for his derby, because of Songandprayer's recording setting pace. If Monarchos had crossed the line in 2:03, history would be less kind to him.

Sorry about that. Angle is just final prep, so SA and Florida top 2.

And outside of Point Given's suppose celebration in the Preakness and Belmont that year, there was nothing.

History and the stop watch have been unkind to many a horse. In the end, greatest of the great simply win.

If Orb was able to win it, Golden Soul was able to run second, and Revolutionary was able to get show...doesn't strike me a much of a field.

A couple years back I discovered nearly every winner had a Brisnet LP of 95+ and about 80% of second place finishers had same. It's really just a lazy handicapper's version of the Stanley Caris final 3/8th fraction method. The impact fell off significantly in the show pool. Definitely something to consider when playing the exacta however there will be quite a few of them this year.
