Just checking in

Well, I'm sure everyone wondered at one time or another where I was or if I'd be back. Or maybe you didn't notice. It's been quite a few months since I spent time here. First, I had to check out religion. Do you remember an episode of the original Star Trek where these two guys who looked exactly alike wind up in a place where they can't get out. So they just fight incessantly. Or the movie Groundhog Day. Hopefully you get the point.

Let's see. My beloved 2008 RAV4 was destroyed when a truck with a trailer forgot that the octagonal red sign means stop. The truck hit me and then the trailer. When my car stopped spinning around I checked all the major body parts and incredibly enough I opened my door and walked out, none the worse for wear. By my figures that is the 12th time I could have found out if I was going to make it to boxcar's eternal resting place. One day go up to the third floor of an office building and ask yourself if you could fall from that level to the concrete sidewalk and just get up and walk away. I did that. Death seems to follow me around. It's like the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote.

I was shook up enough to have the thought, "shit, if I had gotten hurt I could have gotten a lot of money." Later I came to my senses and waited for the residual whiplash. Never came. But, I got an outrageous amount from the insurance company for a 2008 vehicle and went out and bought a RAV4 hybrid. I love that car. lt is surprisingly powerful and I drove from the 398 miles from Denver to Santa Fe on less than than two full tanks. There was a downside, however. I had no important reason to stop and I just decided to fly through Las Vegas and soldier on to Santa Fe. If you haven't been there, it's a great place to check out. I made the almost 400 miles in 5 1/2 hours, which means I averaged around 75 mph, 36 mpg.

So one day I'm driving my new RAV and I go blind in my left eye. In Colorado you're allowed to drive with one eye. I went to a specialist who decided they needed another doctor so there would be a front of the eye guy and a back of the eye guy. Apparently the slot where the lens was broke and there went my vision. The surgery was very delicate. They had to find the old lens and take it out. And then affix a new lens to the back of my eye. The first morning after the surgery I take the bandage off and all I can see is a black hole on an orange background. Don't worry, the docs said, it would get better and it did.

I got my covid shots. Second one was brutal. Did 300 crossword puzzles. and as many jumbles. And somebody tried to used the number on my racing bank account. Thankfully the bank knew I wasn't in Medellin and denied the payment. Just think. I could have been indirectly part of the cartel.

I sort of went through a period where i stopped handicapping and betting. But it's coming back. I'm making two trips to Del Mar and one to Saratoga this summer. I hope I can spend some time with Baffert, but it's hard to get an interview with him. House is paid for, and the car has a fairly low payment. It's time to attack.

Well, I'll try to stop by more often and mention how electricity from the sun and wind is proliferating. By golly, the sun is giving us electricity on a par with natural gas. I called that one. I told my broker, invest in weed, gambling, and renewable energy. These old guys are looking for the old fashioned steady as she goes approach. Every day I read the Motley Fool and cry that I don't have the hear to take my money back.

And if anybody want's to take a swing at me, hit the right side. The left eye is a bit tender. I'll see you all in a few months at the Spa.

After doing this for almost 22 years, so many people have come and gone, it's nice to have someone check in and give an update every now and then.

Sorry to read you've gone through some hellish experiences since we last left off.

Someone once told me they had a theory that every time you have a near-death experience, you actually do die, but simultaneously go on living in an alternate timeline...or something like that...lol

Anyway, here's to smooth sailing for you from here on out...

Incredible story, Halv. You surely had a brush with the Grim Reaper. Scripture says that everyone's days on this earth are numbered by God. Hopefully, you thanked Him for sparing your life.

Hope you continue to heal well.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. I've had a Jobian life. I might write a book about it but who would believe it.
