DIY

If you own stock in Lowe's or Home Depot rejoice. According to NPR News the DIY business is booming. Presumably this is because people who are laid off are finding other ways to keep busy.

I've built a new concrete sidewalk in front of my house. Finished last week. 38 feet long, 44 inches wide, 6 inches deep. Took about 100 bags of concrete. Project cost about $700. Paid my grandsons to help.

Contractor gave us an estimate of $2000.

City will not give us a permit to do the part of the sidewalk in front of the driveway. They insist that part be done by a contractor. We have a contractor who says he will have it done by the end of next week.

Lumber prices have increased drastically in my area. For example, last year I bought 4 x 8 x 7/16 OSB for $7.65 per sheet. Last week, I saw it for $22.48. There is a lumber shortage in the PNW for sure!

That happened to me after a few hurricanes happened around the country while I was building.

Great for taking this on yourself with your Grandson. I have been pouring that grey crap for 45+ years. I hope you have some knowledge or consulted someone who does. There is a lot more to a durable long lasting sidewalk than opening a bag and adding water. Especially if you have freezing winters.
