-$250.00 subscription
-$3,000.00 entry
-$5,000.00 start
--------------------------
-8,250.00
Prize money
$450,000 - 1st
$150,000 - 2nd
$82,500 - 3rd
$45,000 - 4th
$22,500 -5th
Yet, we have 6 horses entered. And of those six, only three have even faced Graded Stakes rivals in their last ten starts.
Song Bird is the only contender who should be under 20-1 in a real Grade 1.
The #6 Hone In should running for a tag somewhere, but if she can beat 1 horse in this race, she should turn a profit.

Some nice horses aren't running because Songbird is. Only a day out, they thought only 2 others were entering. If she romps here impressively, there may be few takers in the Personal Ensign too.

I haven't been following that story.
Did everyone decide not to run there because Songbird was running or did it just happen to come up weak?
If I had a decent filly, I wouldn't mind 2nd money in that race and you could always hope Songbird has a bad day.

I was halfway hoping to see something like the following as the listed conditions:
Quote:
THE TOMATO CAN STAKES for Fillies and Mares who have never finished second or better in Graded Stakes company. 1 1/16 Miles on the Dirt. Purse $150,000. Weight 121 lbs. Weight allowance: 3 lbs. off if lifetime best Beyer does not exceed 85. Plus 2 additional lbs. off if lifetime best Beyer does not exceed 80.

I know it produces moral hazard and do NOT want to see Songbird driven into the rail and injured, but it would be interesting if there could be a "bounty" condition in the handicap where a NW1XG1 (NW2XG1, NW1XG2, etc., etc.) of $250,000+ could draw in some decent graded stakes winning competitors.

I kind of like this idea. On the flip side, writing a condition like that could hurt the race's graded status down the road.

According to my power formula, Songbird should be tough.

This Weep No More's race.
She looks unbeatable on paper.

Props to Martini Glass for her game second.
Claimed for $16K out of her maiden claiming debut. Brought the race to Songbird. And can now be advertised as Grade 2 stakes placed - to a multi-million $ winning, multiple G1 champion.
Why couldn't more owners see this sort of opportunity?
