need a new bike

a while back i bought a 70's converted 1 speed bianchi at a yard sale for 100 and thought it was the bargain of the month. started commuting to work on it a little over two years ago. ever since, the thing has nickle and dimed me to the tune of about 600 more i've put into replace parts or get repairs. now the roads in oakland are the pits, but that's not why it's always breaking. hate to admit it, but i'm too heavy. it's a forty-something year old racing bike. if i weighed 165 this would be fine to commute on every day. at 225 it's always gonna have issues.

looking for a good commuter bike for heavy dudes and bad roads. not looking for the end all, just something with min 12 gears that can take the impost. any suggestions?

You can get a Mongoose box bike at Walmart for ~$145. Probably weighs around 140. 18 speeds, I think. My neighbor bought one and he's had no problems.

If you want to go more expensive there is always Trek or Giant, among others. I'm thinking of mountain bikes. My bikes are mountain bikes, but I only ride them in the city.

Don’t overlook the new electrics

https://electricbikereview.com/best-electric-bikes/

The Verge is a great source of reviews on bikes

www.theverge.com

Search for “electric bike” tons of info.

Don’t be fooled by “electric” you still pedal

You are welcome. I found the site a while back and have ordered 2 mountain bikes from them for my daughter and I.
They put excellent detail into that website, hope you are happy once you try out the new ride.

Many decades ago, when I owned a Volkswagen, there was a German shop that I would take it to for service. Someone had posted a copy of a photo and added a . The photo was of a very heavy man sitting on a motorcycle. The mechanic was looking at the bike. The caption underneath said, "I don't think it is the spark plugs."

Someone gave me -82 rep power points for the above post. Well, I know who it was and thank you.

That gives me -427 rep power points. My goal is -1000.

Any help appreciated.
