I did my best to think guitar playing only (sound/technique), and tried not to be influenced by singing, songwriting, or even the songs themselves. That was harder to do than I thought. Anyway...
- SRV
- Eddie Van Halen
- Neil Giraldo (Pat Benatar)
- Michael Schenker
- Joe Bonamassa
Honorable mention: Neal Schon, Davey Johnstone (Elton John), Brian May

Bonamassa creates a dilemma for me. I'm a huge blues fan and he plays a lot of blues. His speed and technique are other worldly. But if you look at my list it's dominated by guys that play with a lot of feel and that make every single note count. When I watch JB play, I'm mesmerized by some of what he does, but I keep wishing he would slow down, play with more feel, and choose his notes more carefully. I know he can do it because I've seen it.

I agree 100%; he lacks the feel of guitarists like Mayer, Clapton, and many of the old blues greats. I know technique isn't everything. If it was Yngwie Malmsteen would have made my list. (Maybe he should have. lol) I suppose any of my Honorable Mentions could replace him -- Brian May was in that spot originally. I've just been listening to a lot of Bonamassa's stuff for a while and I just couldn't leave him off. There's too many really good guitarists that I enjoy. I didn't mention Robin Trower, Walter Trout, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, etc. Thankfully there's a lot of good music to listen to, especially considering the state of the world.
