My intuition and experience tells me a race like this isn't the thing of kingmakers...

To me, it's just a really cool race to watch. Whether or not this horse ends up being particularly good is completely beside the point. I'm fairly sure you agree.

Agreed. This is an example of why this is a fun sport.

And here's the archetype: Silky Sullivan himself, dropping back 41 lengths off the pace in a 6 1/2 furlong allowance race and then flying down the stretch to win it.

I still remember this one, another first time starter. Not a great horse but really cool to watch:

What par are you talking about ? Unadjusted for track speed ?

That's a no go .

That said, , not sure this race proves much, but will be interesting to see going forward.

Everyone loves horses who can go last to first, especially if they prove to be top class and just keep doing it...its the hard way to win.

Beyer Par, or any speed figure par for the level or for well regarded maidens...sorry for the confusion.

Welcome to the site.

Yes. The track crew alter the dirt composition to prevent freezing.
Fort moisture management, clay is used.
During the cold months, the amount of clay is reduced and sand is increased. Also, salt is added. Sand and salt make for a slower surface.
Here is a snip from an article I found....
"At Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, thoroughbred racing is also year-round, and Track Superintendent Jake Leitzel starts preparing in early October for the winter months ahead. “We start by adding sand to help break down the clay content that’s in it, and that usually takes a good week to get it broken down. Then we start adding salt by the middle of November, or when the temperature drops below 20-25 degrees,” he explained."

I watched the pan angle first. That was a bit surprising.
Then, I watched the head on.....Wow. Horse broke sideways. Kudos to Carmouche for just staying aboard.

Hard to think much of anything during the winter in New York ... even this.

That makes sense. If you add a 5-7 lengths or so for the early trouble , probably a decent fig.

Thing is, bizarre trips like that are often not representative of talent without the trouble .

We'll see

this horse had plenty of talent and heart in this race. i only hope he doesn't get chicken next time he runs.

i remember the race that AROGATE won with the miraculous race. he was never the same after that win.
