I assumed that you were serious. My response was not.

I have seen reports from a number of sources, and they all point to the rebels shooting down what they thought was a Ukraine military transport.

That's my impression, too. I didn't see a translation of a Russian, "Oh, shit" on the televised version of the intercepted call, but I bet there were plenty of them back at HQ.

The leader of the rebels posted on line that they had captured the missiles from a Ukraine base. I believe that it was Monday that he claimed to have shot down a military transport. Thursday morning he posted again, claiming to have shot down another transport plane, and the time and location he gave was roughly the same as the airliner. Shortly after the news of the airline hit the media, all the posts about the rebels were taken down.

News since that time indicates that most commercial flights were avoiding the area. I think the rebels assumed it was a military plane and shot it down.

That seems like the most plausible explanation, but I have to tell you, a LOT of power people have been calling for the US and Europe to get involved. They are coming out of the woodwork to push even harder now because they have the event they needed to rally people.

It all seems kind of convenient to me.

You can start by following Gary Kasparov on twitter and continue from there. Kasparov HATES Putin, wants a single Ukraine aligned with the west, and has been writing articles and doing TV appearances pleading for Europe, NATO and the US to get involved for months. I have followed him on twitter for quite awhile.

There are loads of important people that agree with him, including in the US.

Airline crashes can be the most disturbing to read about. Often those assisting at crash sites go through years of therapy recovering. I read in detail about the PSA 727 that collided with a small plane over San Diego in the 70's. I almost wished I hadn't. The airliner dove into a residential neighborhood and the impact literally torpedoed bodies in all directions, through windshields, windows of homes, everywhere. Truly horrible.

Like I said, your explanation seems the most likely, but the source of #12 was the Ukraine. Ukraine is in a propaganda war with Russian and the people of Ukraine that want to align with Russia.

Just look at the dispute.

The people that want to align with Russia (many of which are probably originally from Russia) are being called terrorists, rebels etc... by the west because they refuse to accept the result of a Ukrainian revolution against an elected government (albeit a corrupt one).

If you ask me, that makes them freedom fighters. The way I understand it, they are not even trying to put Yanukovych back in power. They are simply saying we want to be aligned with Russia so let's split the country in two.

I think all of Ukraine would probably be better off aligning with the west, but there are clearly national security, economic, and ethnic considerations for Russia here that make me think the country should be split. In fact, the meddling of the west is what triggered the whole thing. We offered them a deal in return to access for capital. They were going to do it, but Russia countered with a better deal. Yanukovych sided with Russia and that started the revolution.
