I don’t understand why there would ever be a need for anything but a prop gun on a movie set.

It isn't like Hollywood is a stickler when it comes to accuracy with guns and ballistics. Vintage guns are so common it is probably cheaper to use them than a period correct replica that looks real but can't be fired.

They could just take a die grinder to the firing pin, supposedly there were only supposed to be dummy rounds on set. a while back there was a rumor that someone was target shooting on set during a break.
