If a horse is sore, they're not going to run very fast. Therefore, having a sore horse run on anti-inflammatories is going to make a difference in their race time. Really depends on your definition of PED, I guess.

The thing is, the regulators tell the trainers what they can and can't use. "But, but, they are using this for some good purpose!" doesn't matter. If the government says you can't use it, don't use it!

Smarty Jones didn't race after the Belmont, neither did Big Brown who was trained by Dutrow who was banned for 10 years. There have been many drug cheats who have won TC races.
1. The press extensively covered what happened with Justify.

2. It isn't the "same people". CHRB bows down to Baffert. Churchill and NYRA do not.

Meanwhile, in KHRC news:

Quote:
Kentucky stewards vacated five rulings Jan. 14 previously issued against trainer Joe Sharp in the state related to a series of drug positives for levamisole from races at Churchill Downs in November 2019.

I sounds like the writer reiterated it to explain not asking or getting a quote.

Absolutely, cj.

I am pretty sure the KHRC wasn't amenable to discussing why they penalized Sharp for Levamisole in 2019 when it was declassified in 2015.

Believe me when I say I am no Joe Sharp Apologist. I just don't get why this ever happened to begin with if the two above points are true.

You also have to have good horses and good owners who shell out a lot of money for stock. In the last few years owners who paid a lot for their horses have been giving their horses to him. During those lean years he lost Overbrook and The Thoroughbred Corp as owners. He just didn't have the horses. He was very successful from 1996-2002. Was he doping then and then stopped? If he did stop doping, do you think he would wait 15 years to start again. A guy with his ego wouldn't wait that long. As far as assistants go Barnes has been with Baffert for 22 years. How could he develop any when his top guy doesn't leave? He did have Eoin Hardy. Other than Chad Brown who did Frankel have? He like Baffert had two main assistants for 20 plus years. Baffert also has a smaller stable than most of the other "super" trainers allowing him and his staff to concentrate more on the smaller stable than other trainers who are spread out everywhere With bigger stables relying on assistants more. He ships when he needs to and keeps the rest in California where he likes it.
With all due respect, your posting is full or errors.
Lukas did change his training methods dramatically during this time. I won't go into that here as it will bore everyone, but he did make a lot of changes. He also let his assistants play a larger role in the development of his horses. His son Jeff managed many of these and sometimes not in California.
You can't say that Baffert did not have the horses. He simply was not cheating. This is not about Baffert's record in the late 1990's. This is about his recent time (since 2015). It is obvious when he figured out whatever medical/cheating advantage he did as he began doing things that violate science.
The entire Justify thing (no races as 2 year old, lack of a foundation, etc.) including not even being eligible for the Triple Crown is a joke.
Name another sport where someone with as many violations would be able to remain a participant. Baffert makes Steve Howe look like a choir boy.
He always could develop top assistants even though your top guy is there. Not everyone of Lukas's proteges was an assistant trainer that ran his own shed row, yet he produced them. Eoin Hardy is hardly a Todd Pletcher or even a Mike Maker. If Baffert was such a good horseman then he would have produced many assistants given the races he won.
The small stable arguement does not work either. You mean to tell me that if a rich owner was willing to drop a series of expensive horses in his shed row, you mean to tell me that Baffert would say no, I really do not want any horses.

But apparently the pedigree wasn't convincing enough to give Beautiful Gift a try on the grass today.

Lord of the Idiots still up for grabs...
Entered again today, this time in an allowance race at 9f on the turf. Baffert obviously wants to try her on the grass. As we both said, she's got the breeding for it.

Bit of an odd scenario. A Kentucky Oaks contender last year coming off a long layoff and first start back is on turf for a trainer that tries to avoid turf like the plague.

Also, went from being prepared for a sprint comeback to apparently being ready to go 9 furlongs right off the bench only a week later.

That's 2 horrendous races in a row for her; doesn't bode well for the future. There's been a few of those in that barn recently (Private Mission, Grace Adler).

I didn't read anything, but it seems fairly likely she got hurt or bled in the Black Eyed Susan. There's probably an article or mention out there somewhere.

They must think she's talented enough to try to keep developing her or they wouldn't have brought her back (if she was hurt). The choice to try turf may have been related to the type of injury. Maybe they think she'll stay sound longer on turf and since she's bred for it they'd give it a try. Whatever the thinking was, unless she was VERY short going into that race, it's time for plan B (or C).

Yep; one of his worst training jobs since Officer.

Never got a chance to see if she could break an 85 BSF and ascend to the pantheon of greats.

But to be fair, on the flip side, he was able to resurrect Kalypso from the underworld to win a Grade 1 with a 78 Beyer.

So it isn't all bad...
