NYRA, What the heck?
They get 8,000 for a 3PM Friday and next week we go back to 1 O'clock? Why only the one sunset day? They had more people yesterday than they had on last years Gold Cup day.

Maybe they misprinted the programs and had to go at 3. Next week they can get back to "normal."

The schedules are mapped out months in advance.

Apparently, it's the only twilight card of the meeting. They used to run them every Friday starting after the Belmont Stakes in years past...
Based on the popularity, one wonders why this has only been a one time thing this year.

Nobody ever accused NYRA of knowing what they are doing. That's why they are in such bad shape.

At least they aren't cancelling cards due to lack of entries, like out in synth land...

Is that actually an argument for NYRA competence?
Anytime you have to bring into the argument a comparison to the most incompetent, inept and clueless bunch of morons ever to walk the planet.....that probably isn't good for the other side.

I didn't realize I was in full argument mode. I thought we were simply in "little quip" mode.

Is there a known and predictable difference in handle? CD seems to do pretty well with later starts on Fridays as well ....

You realize this but still can't put 2 and 2 together to understand what the financial status was a few months ago? Do you realize to have the activities that they put on yesterday contracts have to be signed months in advance?
I love how people continually repeat and repeat complaints even when they have no basis for what they are whining about.
PS, the opening card at Saratoga is a friday twilight card. Think they might do some good business that day?

Twilight cards should be the norm during the week, and not only at NYRA.

This is false. Opening Day is 1:00. The 2nd Friday and Friday before Labor Day are 2:30.
They had a Billy Joel cover band playing after the races. The per capita was $130 which is very low for NYRA.
I believe some business-related explanation was given when they cut down the twilights to one day. Maybe TLG can provide insight. However, I do know that one reason Monmouth never liked twilight on Fridays was because from 1:00-3:00 Monmouth was the only game in town. Export business was brisk those days (Monmouth will go "twilight"- with a 2:10 post- 7/9, 16 and 23)

From NYPOST.com:
Quite a crowd -- 7,921 compared with 2,714 last Friday -- showed up for yesterday's twilight-racing "Party at the Park," the only one this year at Belmont after six during each meet in 2008 and 2009. NYRA says it cut back on twilight racing because the betting handle is higher during the day, but it seems that getting people in through the door, many of them younger fans, with live entertainment and happy hour from 4-9, is a good way to build the customer base.
There will be two Friday twilight-racing cards at Saratoga.

Here is the main problem most of us see, older people who bet want to stay home.
