Sadly, I can't say I'm surprised by this recent tragedy.

The immediate suspicion, of course, is that the train driver screwed up. I heard reports of blood tests and examination of his cell phone records.
This thing is also going to turn into a political game of hot potato. No matter what the engineer did or didn't do, the train could not have been going that fast if there was a Positive Train Control (PTC) system operational. This is a computerized system that would have determined the speed of the train and the speed limits there, overridden the train controls, and slowed or stopped it.
This is existing technology, and it works. As I remember, there was a law passed many years ago requiring the entire Amtrak system to have PTC fully operational this year. So we can expect the usual bureaucratic BS. Congress will want to blame Amtrak for not complying with their wise decisions, and Amtrak will accuse Congress of not giving them enough money to do it.

I agree - that's why I said people should go to prison.
From what I heard so far, a damn lot of them.
Some of the are probably sitting in elected offices right now.

I agree the control system should be in place .
On the other hand there was one person who had all these victims
lives in his hands . He was irresponsible and should be charged .
They wee giving him time for his injuries . He lawyered up in no time.
He won't remember a thing !

Or in executive offices at Amtrak. Somebody screwed up on this. More likely, many somebodies, from the train jockey to the upper reaches of Congress.

Federal rules require the national rail network to have an operating PTC system by the end of the year, though many lawmakers have endorsed rail industry appeals for more time to comply.
In March, the Senate Commerce Committee voted to extend the deadline for implementing PTC until at least 2020. Both Republicans and Democrats supported the measure which will now go to the Senate floor.

There is a wild rumor circulating on the internet (so you know it has to be true!) that the engineer is now asserting that he was struck in the head by a projectile that came through the cab window seconds before the accident.
FBI is supposedly on the case big time.

There was just a story on NBC News about another train that had its windshield shattered by something, around the same time and place.

sad
wonder if it was incompetence or if they turn it off/override it to "make up time" some times.

Amtrak says that the PTC system was installed on that stretch of track, but had not been turned on because they had not yet received authorization to use the necessary bandwidth from the FCC.
