One of their strengths were writing these bouncy catchy dittys with some rather dark lyrics.
Here's one, a cocktail lounge jazz sounding song about a guy who shows porn movies to kids and seems to be a child molester.
to Walter Becker.Although as lead singer Donald Fagen got most of the attention, Becker was a fine guitarist and songwriter.

Walter Becker, RIP
Truth be told the band never really sold out many buildings for their concerts nor sold tons of records.

maybe not, but they have 3 albums in the top 500 -

their albums were made mostly with studio musicians and they never really toured much, but they had plenty of air time
they are talking about Deacon Blues here

I go to see a cover band every last Thursday of the month. They have a huge following, they don't start the first set until 10:30 and the place is always packed. The crowd is 40 + and mostly male. Some college kids show up and it is clear they are familiar with the music. Great duo, they created alot of classics.

They were too classy musically IMO. Being a great band doesn't every single time translate into record sales and sold out stadiums.

This has been true forever.
And the musical taste of the average human has actually deteriorated below levels I didn't think possible.

Swing style horns with prominent sax (Deacon Blues/FM)...percussions that could fit most rock...jazz strings and keyboards (Home At Last)...and avante-garde lyrics...
One of a kind.

They have a number of songs that live on. That's more than can be said of a lot who probably sell tons and have good tour numbers, particularly this fluff pop and rap that's almost all that's out there today. Thank God for Ed Sheeran and Adele.
