HKJC Racing - William Benter (Hong Kong Syndicate Fame) Presentation!

By way of encouragement to those who are currently experiencing protracted losing runs, I suggest you download and listen to the William Benter (Hong Kong syndicate fame) presentation (entitled What are my odds?) to the Third Congress of Chinese Mathematicians last year.

I particularly like the way he nonchalantly refers to horse-racing as being 'near to his heart' and, later in the presentation, shows a graph of which he is 'particularly proud' (master of understatement).

Best wishes,

John

Classic Article (1994) - Published in Dr Z's Efficiency of Racetrack Betting Markets

Joe / John,

As you are already aware, his original 1994 article, Computer Based Horse Race Handicapping and Wagering Systems: A Report,
published in Dr Z's Efficiency of Racetrack Betting Markets outlined his methodology and the 2004 presentation above confirms that he is continuing to use the same basic approach today.

I am aware that the Ziemba book is 'Out of Print' and, as a result, it is difficult to find even a second-hand copy in good condition at a reasonable price (Amazon - USD 1500?). Therefore, if you feel that it would be of value to you, I could summarize the main points of the article so that you can better appreciate his methodology.

Best wishes,

John

Hey, don't want to hijack an offer for somebody else but I would love to hear your summary for Benter's methods, if that's ok.

This report is also included in Nick Mordin's book Winning Without Thinking.

Nick Mordin: Synopsis for Review?

Bill,

Nick is an excellent horse-racing analyst so, if he also provides a summary of Benter's approach in Winning Without Thinking, then perhaps you would be better placed to provide a synopsis of his methodology for review?

Best wishes,

John

He provided the report as a reprint in the Appendix. I'll have to read back through the book to see if he provided any commentary on it.

It's also in "Efficiency of Racetrack Betting Markets"
with tons of other papers edited by Hausch, Lo and Ziember
Academic press

I just noticed that there is a chart for 2500 plays in the paper. It
looks like the chart he presented in the conference. I think the conference chart was for 6000(?) races

yep, just checked the conference chart. 6000 races. But it looked like the line's slope started to change after 2500. (to about 1/2)
