my senior year in h.s. a huge game was tenatively scheduled between Dematha and St. Anthonys who was coached by John Thompson - and he had attracted several of the best players in the city - Adrian Dantley was a junior at that time

we - a suburban team - played them and they crushed us

Morgan Wooten demanded certain things about the venue - Dematha had a terrible gym with very little seating and he and Thompson could not agree so the game never took place

3 of the players on Thompson's team excelled in major college basketball after they graduated - and one played in the ABA

it was an awesome h.s. team

after the season Sport Magazine named St. Anthonys as the #1 h.s. team in the country

the only other squad that could handle Dematha back in the day was Mackin High with Austin Carr. Austin destroyed them as he did anybody who faced him in h.s. or college

I'll never forget when we played them Jonathan Smith who later excelled at Georgetown took a jumper over me - I was crouched down a little - I'm only 5'9" - and his feet were in my face - I was like wtf is this

I had a layup and Donald Washington - who excelled at UNC for one year before getting injured and who also played in the ABA got called for goaltending. he pinned my layup to the board about 12.5 feet up there - it was insane back then for a h.s. player to go up that high

____________

a walk down memory lane

in 1970, after the season, St. Anthonys of DC was named the #1 high school team in the nation by Sport Magazine

they were coached by John Thompson who later won an NCAA Championship with Georgetown
St. Anthonys had 3 players who later excelled in major college basketball and one of them played in the ABA

my team - a suburban Maryland team - played them and they crushed us

I had to guard Jonathan Smith, who later excelled at Georgetown.
I was crouched down defensively for one play - he took a jumper over me - and I'll never forget - his feet were in my face

I had a layup and it was goaltended by Donald Washington who excelled one year at UNC and then played in the ABA

he pinned my shot to the backboard about 12.5 feet up there

I know when it happened my eyes got big and my mouth dropped open

back then, it was absolutely insane to see a h.s. player who could go up that high

it's never a great memory of getting crushed by a team

but it is fun to remember that at least I at one time competed against the very best at that level - and of course I know that they were playing the game at a much higher level than me

I finished the game with 11 points

John Thompson's Georgetown teams became famous for great defense

so I can brag a little bit

I had double figures on a John Thompson team________________(~/

Atlantic City before casinos - it was a tremendously popular destination for a long time until its decline

Jerry Lucas shot an incredible .624 from the field thru his 3 year college career while averaging almost 25 p.p. g. - amazing

that's a higher % than Wilt who probably shot 80% dunks and finger rolls

for comparison purposes - in college - West shot .508 and Oscar .535

there is no doubt in my mind that many players, including pros, could not shoot .624 from the field even if they're in a gym shooting around by themselves -

Same here. And the ABC crew did a great job with their last TC broadcast, which happened to be the relatively underwhelming 2000 series.

EARL THE PEARL

in 1967 Earl the Pearl Monroe aka Black Magic came to the Baltimore Bullets. it was a very big deal for hoops lovers in our area - DC had no pro hoops team at that time. only about 21 years old - the man was already a legend. a bus was chartered from the DC area and me and my buddies went to see his first home game at the Baltimore Civic Center. he did not disappoint. he whirled, he twirled - he faked opposing players out so bad they sometimes fell down while trying to guard him - I love hoops and this is my all time fave memory as a fan__________ the vids of him really don't do him justice - he was much more exciting than what they show______

Gaylord Perry, king of the Spitball has passed

in his career he won 314 games, stuck out more than 3500 batters and won 2 Cy Young awards

in the vid he strikes out Reggie Jackson with his "super sinker" - actually a spitter - and Reggie is not at all happy about it

I retired from baseball at the age of 10, for a couple reasons. I was probably one of the few kids that age that had experience trying to hit a knuckle ball as my dad could throw them, where often they would not rotate in the least.

It seriously blows my mind they can even reach home plate.

____________

the legend of Babe Ruth calling his shot (home run) in the 1932 World Series

you can see him pointing at 1:35 in the YT vid

but most have decided he was pointing at the Cubs bench and holding up 2 fingers - indicating it was only 2 strikes - they were trash talking him

even so that that is probably true - what a great story about an incredibly gifted player

Charlie Root is a Middletown, Ohio native; the same Middletown that Jerry Lucas, from a couple posts earlier in this thread, is from.
